Topic Dog Boards / Health / losing weight?
- By dollface Date 04.02.11 11:25 UTC
As you no Tiva had her eye removed on thanksgiving- well lately have noticed she is starting to lose weight. She will be 13yrs on June 9th so she is a lil old doggy. Doesn't see or hear to good now a days but still loves a cuddle. Would canned food, also zeal (The Honest Kitchen) http://www.thehonestkitchen.com/ help add on some weight? She also has her normal dry food, right now I am feeding them Natures Logic http://www.natureslogic.com/

Shoud I be to concerned about her weight loss, could it be due to old age?

Thank you

If she is not eating then I would be concerned.

I would just increase her food intake for a couple of weeks and if the weight keeps coming off then it might be wise to get her checked over.

Hi dollface, it seems to be true of all species that as they get old and frail weight loss is very common. Has she been for a check up lately--if not if could be good to get her along to your vet. If it's just about keeping up her weight then breast of lamb or tripe could help, but there may be an underlying issue that needs sorting. If the check up shows she is as well as can be  for her age, still eating etc then you may not be able to do much more for her beyond giving her the love you always have. Big hugs to the old girl :)

Yes she has been for a check up lately, still very healthy for her age... She still eats her food as normal... I have decided to add water to her hard kibble and also give her some canned food thinking maybe her teeth- she enjoys this but just not a huge appetite like she use to have in her younger days. I free feed them and she still goes and eats at her normal times morning then again around 4 and some times a lil nibble later on... She's still active but not like she use to be, seems to get tired and likes to have alot more naps. Must be the age thing creeping up on her. Its hard when you realize ur furkids are getting old- not the springy pup they use to be :-(

Not a lot different to us people really, are they--as long as your girl wakes up to love, care and comfort you can't do much more, just enjoy the days together as they come. We all know there is no easy way of getting through this stage. All mine are 3 or younger, and I know one day, if we are lucky, we will all reach pensioner status together :)

Know how you're feeling, we have a Boxer girl who's 13 and a half, it's hard seeing her pottering about, she still has the odd (short) play in our field with our other Boxer who's 10 but sleeps a lot more than she used to.  Eve eats ok but not with the gusto she used to in her younger days.

She's still my baby- a lil slower but enjoy every minute we have together :-)
