Last litter I used the link-a-bord and although this was fab for when the puppies were up and about I didnt like it for when they were newborn. Im about the order a box for my girl and am looking at the newborn whelping box. Just wondered if any of you have any experience with these?
I have asked before but did only get one reply and now I have more questions lol.
If you have used it then how did you keep it clean? While the bitch is whelping how did you manage to keep the blood etc off the sides? I dont like the idea of using for weeks when there is fluids etc on the sides off where my girl has whelped.
How long did it last you? Im planning on putting them into the link-a-bord box once they reach around 4 weeks old...will it last me this long?
Was it easy to make a lid for it? Im sure there are many more questions lol
Thanks
hi use these welping boxes all the time i get mine from petnap which are a bit cheaper than newborn.
i put lino at the bottom of the box as it is easy to keep clean i have pups in till about 4 weeks then more them in to a wooden box.
the petnap ones dont come with a lid but they are very easy to put up.
hope this helps

never used them but not for me I cant understand how you can keep them disinfected...cant believe you have a linkabord and dont like it...is it because it doesnt have a top as its easy to make one or do like JJ does and put a table over it with a blanket on top.
My whelping boxes are made of conti board , top is 2x1 making the lid covered with a blanket makes it easy to clean and nice warm and snug ....plus when the puppies are being born I climb in the box with her and help deliver.
A friend of mine bought one of these for his large breed, thinking it would be a good idea, but before she whelped the bitch scratched the heck out of it, making it completely unusable, and then he had to race around trying to find a 'proper' whelping box in rather a hurry!...
Starryeyes, the only problem I had with my link-a-bord was that the whelping rails were far too high off the floor and my bitch could get her whole body under it, resulting in a squashed 5 day old puppy, even though I was on the couch right next to her (I had fallen asleep). It isnt worth the risk using it for newborns again...unless someone could come up with an idea of how to lower the rails, I thought about switching the boards around so the rail was on the bottom board instead but not sure if this is possible???
Thats my concern, keeping it clean....they say they dont need any disinfection but Im not terribly happy with this. My girl box gets clean morning and night with parvovirucide, the link a bord is good for that as its pvc and very easy to clean but surely you cant do this with the cardboard? Unless it has a waxy layer on it??
My girl did dig a lot last time but mainly stuck to ripping the paper, isnt itmeant to have a plastic waterproof bottom in it?
Affenport I did look at those ones but the sides dont look very high. They are cheaper but I would really prefer the lid and the higher sides, main reason is becuase I dont want my one yr old trying to look in all the time, obviously he wont be unsupervised near her and wont be allowed in her box etc. The higher the sides are the better and the safer she will feel with her babies.

cant you just remove the rails that come with it and buy some white piping from B&Q and put your own in at the height you know is best for your dog , thats what my hubby fitted on my whelping box, much cheaper than buying a cardboard box.
Really speaking the best prevention from squashed puppy is constant vigilence I never leave them alone , even with the rails puppies get laid on ...the amount of times I pulled a puppy out from under mum in the middle of the box..countless!
If I had to leave the room ..so did Mum.

If you ask LinkaBord, I did, they will make the holes for the rails lower. I measured where I wanted them and they made holes in the right place. I have two almost on the base of the box and two slightly higher that sit over the top of the lower ones in the corners . They also modified mine so that I can have thr front opening right open when the pups are about 4 weeks old so they can get out withoiut having to clamber over the sides .
