Topic Dog Boards / Breeding / Bitch showing at 4 weeks?!
- By tiegold [gb] Date 31.01.11 10:51 UTC
Tiegan is back at the vets tonight to be rescanned, after being scanned last Sunday and told there was only one pup in there but could be more hiding. I decided after what you said on here to ignore that scan completely and pretend it didnt happen lol. That doesn't mean to say it hasn't given me some very strange dreams about sections and my poor girl.
I have NO doubt that she is still in whelp, dont know how after the possible broken foot episode and all the stress that came with that. I did say a week ago that I would be amazed if she had any babies at all, however, now Im saying that Ill be amazed if there is any less than 10 in there. Im actually a little concerned about her size! Yes OK she was on complete rest for 4-5 days last week so no exercise at all and she is a large gundog breed who tend to gain weight very quickly and easily. However, this is not fat! Her tummy is rock hard, has a definate bulge when she jumps up and is stretched, the hair on her waist is tufting out if you know what I mean and her ribs have definately sprung right out. She will be 30 since 1st mating (new years day) and 28 days from 2ndmating.
I suppose only time will tell and I know that they are generally bigger with their second litter anyway but she is the same size now at 4 weeks as she was at 7 weeks last time!! She had 8 last time and that was more than enough for her lol.
Anyone else had a bitch show at 4 weeks? Just curious really, Im hoping the vet will give me a bit of an idea as she is a breeder herself and is very experienced at scanning, unlike the last scanner!

The last bitch I had in whelp showed at 4 weeks, she was massive. She had 8 which is massive and practically unheard of in my brred. They normally have two or three. Litter before that she had 3.

My bitch is currently 7 weeks pregnant and she was definitely showing at 4 weeks , she is absolutely massive , so much so that i went for a re scan as i was concerned about her size - we clearly saw 11 puppies :-0 and poss one tucked high up under the ribs :-0 .  My girl was as big at 5 weeks as she was at 9 weeks last time. Try not to worry about her (easier said than done i know) , i doubt the broken toe episode will have done her any harm , just make sure she is still having regular exercise . Good luck with your scan.

Oh my goodness!!!!! I can see the vet telling me that theres 12 in there or something!!!
I really thought after last week that I was going to have some very disappointed puppy owners, some have been on this list for 3 months before she even came into season!
So far we have 7 homes and I stopped taking them as I was worried we wouldn't have enough babies to go around, now Im worrying about the fact that I may not have enough homes lmao....typical isn't it?!
Ah well, Im sure all will be just fine and no doubt we'll just have the 8 again, the last one was a lovely sized litter:-)

I wish you the best of luck Lucysmith on the whelping of your girl, hope for you both that its a very quick and straight forward one.

Will be back on tonight to tell you all the news.....just you watch, she wont be in whelp AT ALL!! LOL Ill just be imagining the whole thing hahaha

My girl was slightly showing at 4 weeks (also large gundog breed)... we scanned and confirmed definate pregnancy, but I didn't want to know numbers, so the vet just said there were clusters but definately 4.

She's 6 weeks this week and looks big so goodness knows what she'll look like just before birth lol .  A friend of mine in the breed had a person with a sheep scanner come to scan at 5 weeks, the scanner told her there was only 2 pups... she had 9! ;-)

Good luck :)

Hi all back from vets, Sam the vet said its clear she is in whelp just by looking at her lol, poor girl!!

She counted at least 8 puppies and said that she was also carrying high up and she thought there could be a couple up there too. Blimey, I do hope theres not many more than 8! Theyre all very similar in size and all have the same amount of fluid. We got lots of lovely pics, quite a few with 4 puppies in one pic :-) Saw their little heartbeats flickering away and they were jumping around all over. Im so so relieved, have had some awful dreams the last week. Well better get the stud owner told and all those potential puppy owners, they're going to be over the moon :-)
Looks like I can relax a little now, well maybe for the next 3 weeks or so lol. Off to get the panacur ordered in :-)

When is the the best time to scan please?
We are hoping our girl is pregnant this time and after it didn't happen last season we can hardly wait to know either way this time... we're only a couple weeks in at the moment so plenty of time.. Good luck with yours- how exciting !
Cheers :)

Hi Louise, The waiting is horrible isn't it lol.
The first scan we had was at 21 days and we could only see one pup. It was a very worrying time waiting for the next scan, wondering whether or not she was going to have one huge pup. After that experience I wont ever scan before 28 days. Tiegan is 30 days from 1st mating today, 28 days from 2nd mating.....it was very clear there were lots there the second the doppler was put on her tummy....good luck. Hope your girl is in whelp, I know what its like when they miss, thi girl missed her first time, it was so very disappointing. Keeping my fingers crossed for you

Thanks for that, 28 days it will be (from 2nd mating) ... I know - the waiting is nearly unbearable after an initial disappointment !

What good news for you. i expect that's a weight off your mind.  its worrying when you think they're getting stressed.

Sounds like you'll have you're hands full.  You'll be throwing them out the door at eight weeks lol for some peace and quiet.  Fingers crossed for it being smooth sailing from now on.

This is the first time 3weeks have felt like 5 minutes, i thought about scanning at 21 days but you have helped me wait a little longer.

got everything crossed reikiangel
