Hi all,
I send my bitches blood to idexx for pre mate testing and my new vet has tried to charge me £50 just to take the blood, but what has really really made me huff is my friend that lives about 200 miles from me, well her vet charges £6. HOW DO THEY JUSTIFY THIS?????    STILL FUMING LOL
- By tadog [gb] Date 29.01.11 18:31 UTC
Dont know what is a reasonable price but, £6.00 is very, very, cheap. At the end of the day you are paying for consultation, time, and the blood is also being tested. I would have not been shocked at £50.00

Ive got a rabies blood test to pay for on Monday and dont expect my vet to charge less than £50 to take the blood....I do have a very expensive vet.

Her vet obviously didn't charge for the consultation, just the cost of the syringe and vial used. I'd expect anywhere from £30 for the consultation with the added costs on top.

That is discusting, one of the vet nurses takes blood for our idexx test and it costs us NOTHING.

wow !! i only paid about £8 i think for bloods to be taken from our vet and a nurse to help when our boy had his hemo test.

I paid £57 for the blood taking and one lab test two years ago.

In general you'd be beter off spending the money on the fuel and seeing what the stud dog says ;)

It's not as simple as that though is it Brainless?  I took my girl to be mated last year, both her and the stud dog were really keen got two good matings and ended up with nothing.

My vet charges me £18 to take blood if I want to send it off to Idexx,.

> I paid £57 for the blood taking

Sounds similar to what I recently paid.  I have to say that my vet isn't cheap, but I only want him, so pay it.  I 100% totally refuse to have a nurse take bloods.

I have only ever taken bloods if things were not straightforward the previous time or as with Myka your wondering if the bitch is going to ovulate at all.

Certainly wouldn't test routinely
- By Norman [gb] Date 30.01.11 08:24 UTC
I have never had to test (luckily I think) as my dogs know when it is time and they've not let me down yet.
- By Pedlee Date 30.01.11 09:03 UTC
I guess I'm lucky with my Vets then, who are certainly not cheap generally. They didn't charge me a consultation fee last year, just £7.50 to draw the blood. I will be doing it again this year, so hope the charges remain the same!

I must be really lucky here - my vet did not charge last time I sent blood for Optigen testing.  He did charge me the time before for two dogs I was only £15 - and he had never done this test before, so new learning curve for us both

No thats not with the testing included, thats just for taking the blood, it just seems ridiculouse at the price difference

I paid £57 at the vets for the health certification in my Pet Passport saying she was fit to fly and a note to say she was acclimatised to low temperatures to 20'F.

Again the equivalent in dollars for the tick and tapeworm administration,a dn that was supplying my won medication.

The Pet Passport all told cost £250.

That's over £300 to allow me to travel to stud with my bitch.  Probably more than average back yard breeder spends on rearing their litter by their own dog or a friends around the corner.

Do you know yet if your US trip was successful Barbara?
- By Brainless [gb] Date 30.01.11 20:17 UTC
Definitely pregnant, small tight but obvious 'bump' so don't think ti will be a big litter.  If we could get two of each  I'd be happy.  7 weeks from first mating tomorrow

Fingers (and paws) crossed you get your wish!

I paid £30.00 which included a pull consult and exam.  Vet sent it off to idexx via curiour.
