Beginners class as he is a show dog and do not want him to sit.

I have show dogs come to my classes. The dogs are taught to stand, or to sit and the owners do not have a problem with them sitting in the show ring.  My dogs were all taught to stand & sit. even now although I dont show they will still stand if asked, it comes in handy for examination at vets ect.

If you concentrate on finding a good trainer/class where they teach reward based training with kind methods and a dollop of commonsense they'll help with this too.

They won't ask you to encourage behaviours you don't want but as far as a sit goes they'll probably teach you to get all the positions.  Most dogs learn the difference between sit and stand pretty quickly anyway and you decide when to ask for them.

I think my boy was one of the first show dogs my trainer worked with and she really enjoyed helping us with the 'show' elements, and customising exercises for us.  He completed puppy foundation all the way up to KC Gold Citizens Gold, and still did everything needed in the show ring.  A good APD Trainer is worth searching for so good luck.  Try and watch a class before you decide - there are a few duffers about :)

I don't get the it's a show dog and I don't want them to sit.  I've done obedience with mine and they know when they are at obedience and have to sit and when they are at a show and need to stand.  In Pom's and Spanish I've never had a problem with it.

It amazes me how many ringcraft people say ooh you can't do obedience with a show dog.

Both my boys have achieved their KCGC Gold awards and both are shown and we have no bother with sit and stand commands. The trainer for the obedience was aware and said we could avoid the sit if we wanted, that went for any show people, but I didn't and thought no they need to know an array of commands.. I just make sure they have different leads for different training..

Ditto

...and they're not daft are they - they know immediately what's coming up, be it a muddy walk, training classes or a show.  Mine also head for the right door as muddy walks leave through the back!

I agree.

Three of my dogs have been shown, I also did obedience with them, work them and do clicker training. multi talented.........

phew had me worried there for a minute I want to try showing but also train towards obedience. Particulalry at the early stages I wont know which is best for us and I also want a well trained dog

The people who say you should not teach a show dog to sit are those who cannot successfully train a dog.

Remember there are dual champions in some gundog breeds who have to sit and there are many dogs who have competed successfully in the Show Ring at Championship level who excel at obedience, Working Trials and/or Schutzhund! ;)

I teach mine to stand while they are still unable to go out until their vaccs are in order. Then at 12 weeks they go to obedience on a Tuesday night and ringcraft on a Wednesday night. They do all their stands at ringcraft and sits at obedience. I have never had a problem as the stands are solid with doing the training at home. I think the 'secret' is to never let them get bored. Just a minute at a time and a nice tasty morsel does the trick.

We are doing the Gold Test (KCGC) at the moment with our 16mth Boxer, also we go to Ringcraft also last summer our dog training group gave displays with the dogs doing various obedience tasks to raise funds for Raystede, and to cap it all we do Agility so a very multi-tasking Boxer.

I do conformation, obedience and rally with my dogs. I do teach stand first, and I give a definite 'sit' command after heelwork rather than have them start assuming whether I want a sit or a show stand. But other than that, I've never had any major trouble. My trainer at Hetty's puppy class has 3 different commands for her own dog depending on if she wants strict obedience heelwork, relaxed rally heelwork, or show walking!
