How do you get you dog wee samples.

My boys are easy as they go every few yards, but my little c. spaniel bitch only goes once every few hours and if I miss it then I might as well give up.
There I was at 5am this morning in nighty and wellies following her round the garden with a large spoon in one hand and a torch in the other,( neighbours think I'm mad anyway and this confirms it )  every time she began to squat I was there with my soup ladle, and so she looked at me and moved on. This happened 3 times then eventually she ran to the far end and did the deed and by the time I got there it was all over. I kicked myself for not putting her on a lead but with a torch in one hand and a ladle in the other, I would have to hold the lead in my teeth !!  ( by this time neighbours would call men in white coats)
I also thought about mopping up the wet patch with cotton wool and squeezing it into the bottle, but common sense tells me it could be contaminated.
Is there an easy way to do this that I should know about?

You should be able to get a collection bottle from your vet that has an attachment which makes it bigger and easier to collect, and also the urine will drain straight into the bottle. It's still not easy for a bitch but it's an improvement. :)

When I needed a sample I was told to give a bowl of warm chicken stock or warmish water with a splash of milk to increase fluid intake.  It does help.

We also used, as suggested by a bitch owner (for a boy that squats!), a plastic takeaway container or other shallow dish/tray.  But yes, on lead is better, and a tray doesn't need too many extra hands :)

Good luck

maybe we should train our pups to use a peepot

I haven't had too many problems following at a discrete distance with a takeaway container & waiting til they squat then go for it!  Sometimes when my vet has needed a sterile sample he will use a scanner to find the bladder and used a fine needle to access it and draw urine out with no discomfort to my bitch whatsoever.

Hi Sue, Cut a 4 pint milk carton in half then cut a dip in the front, keeping the handle on the other side, then scoop it behind them when they start to wee. Hope that helps. Lois

Hi Sue, How are you getting on??

Ah I have been there! Incase you are still trying or for anyone else who might be looking for tips, I got the best tip ever after trying takeaway cartons, trays etc. I was told to use a dustpan. I followed at a distance (off lead so not to cause suspicion) waited to til said girly had squatted and was happily weeing and then slipped the dust pan under and angled up slightly to keep the contents. It's easy to follow while they finish because off, waiting til they have got going they tend to carry on. It even worked with my little pocket rocket of a girl, I was in quicker than she could move.

Hi,
I managed to get one the next morning, so had to delay the appt. at vets and re-schedule. I have a long flattish spoon , the sort used for dishing up veg etc and it has a long handle similar to a soup ladle, this was given to me by a friend who used one like this for all her dogs samples. The problem is that my little rescue c spaniel is very nervous and gets worried if I approach while she squats, also she is down and up in just a few seconds. So every time I got near her she was off to a different place further and further away. If it had been daylight I would have put her on a lead but as it was dark I needed a hand for the torch and one for the spoon (so no hand for a lead) Only a mad doggie person would walk around the garden in the dark in nighty and wellies carrying a torch and a spoon ! Never mind we got there in the end, I hope one sample is enough..........
I like the idea of the carton or dustpan for the boys as quite often their wee shoots straight out of the spoon as it is too flat to catch theirs.
