Topic Dog Boards / General / What size cage for labrador in Focus 5 door hatch 2007?
- By mandyandcarl [gb] Date 17.01.11 12:02 UTC
Dear All,
We are looking to get a travel cage for the boot of our Focus Hatchback 5 door 2007 for an adult labrador.  I have seen a couple that should fit, eg Savic 60cm wide x91cm long x 72cm high with sloping front, or Canine Concepts A3 back and front slope 64cm wide x 91 cm long x 67cm high.

Has anyone got a similar size car/cage/dog, or advise a better cage without breaking the bank? I think it will tight for the dog, but the websites say ok for labs.

Grateful for any advice,
Mandy

If space is a bit tight have you thought about a dog guard and tailgate guard?

You can get them from Barjo, MMG, Guardsman etc and they are a great solution for smaller boots.  Your dog can take advantage of all the space available, even awkward spaces above the wheel arches can accomodate an outstretched paw, and you don't lose any head room either.

...oh and you can often get them secondhand too, try eBay

Thanks, yes I had been looking at them too and they look great for space.  Only downside I can see is if he starts to chew bits of the car he can access. Might have a look on ebay.

Good point.  I have puppies in a smaller rectangular crate to start with but I also don't really have a 'chew' breed!!

Another alternative is a custom fitted crate which is exactly sized for your boot.  Dog Pod from Hamster Baskets also feature pull out extensions which can be used if you put one of the seats down.  Most of the aforementioned companies will make you a crate and some may already have your cars dimensions on record.

Finally, don't forget that if you go to somewhere like Pets at Home they are pretty good at letting you try the standard sloped car crates for size, both in the car and with your dog...

I would be a little careful going off manufacturers size guides, they are usually on the tight side. IMHO the dimensions you give don't really look big enough for a lab, especially a male. Ideally he should be able to turn around comfortably, and stretch out whilst lying down. The sloping front also significantly reduces the space available.

Thanks, I think we are going away from the crate idea for the boot given the size.  We may use one while he is up to 6 months, but after that probably a boot liner and back seat guard to give him most room until we change cars.

Thanks for your help everyone
