I have a Golden Retriever puppy, bred here, who will be coming out at the end of February. She, unlike my other dogs, is going to be a cream rather than darker golden colour.

My question is: should I be using a particular shampoo for her, such as one for white coats? (she's not actually white, more like light cream). I've noticed some yellowy patches on her coat & wondered... Her mother and my resident male have regular shampoo, and they're mid gold in colour. Is there a chance that the mud she's picking up on every walk will stain her coat? Not much I can really do about it, as they're getting dirty every time they step out of the door!! We don't bath very often, but she will need to be clean for shows.

Also, is there a dietary supplement she should be having to perhaps help her coat & help stop excessive moulting? I know many show people use supplements, but apart from a very healthy puppy & a good diet, she doesn't have anything extra at present.

Thanks in advance.

I never showed my GR so might not be relivant.  I just used a moisturising dog shampoo or odour fresh shampoo.  This kept the coat nice.  its better to have regular brushing and let the coat blow out 9if a girl).  it renews the coat and like nice once done.  Can look good when happening if you're prpared to groom lots at that stage.

I've never noticed staining on my girl from mud or anything, so i think she is turning darker.  i was told why a lot pale goldies are in the ring is due to them going darker as they reach adulthood.  There are not many what i call proper Goldens in the ring because of this.  i'm lucky she's a good golden.  i use a mild conditioner on her as well if i need to remove loose coat.  i had a problem before due to her age where nothing worked, I did an intense condition and used a slicker gently to remove it.

You have to do a show cut as well, but don't know if you do it from pup (which i only learnt last year).

Hope it help, Pedley or janw have show Goldies.  Maybe give them a pm if they don't see your post.

Good luck at the shows.  its so nice seeing all those Goldie together.

I have a pale golden that I show. I wouldn't worry too much about a special shampoo, the one I use is Groomers Evening Primrose. When my girl drops her coat, she tends to get pale patches, but this is just because of lack of top coat. Is there any chance that the yellow stains could be from urine?

My girl did used to be bothered with pink staining on her cheeks, but since feeding a raw diet this has gone. I haven't personally had a problem with mud staining the coat, but do remember a thread from a while back where someone thought their red mud was staining the coat. I can't remember the conclusion though.

I wouldn't expect a 5 month old puppy to be moulting excessively, if she is, then I would perhaps look at what I was feeding. I am not a fan of giving puppies supplements, as is too easy to unbalance things.

Thanks for your replies. Our pup is going to be light, but I can already see she will have a little colour. We're lucky as she has a great thick coat already. I'll keep shampooing her with our regular shampoo.
