My friends girl is on day 61..her temp has dropped very slowly during the day and is at present 37.0 (98.6),
she has been digging over the last couple of nights..keeping her owner up and although eating today, certainly isnt eating as she normally does..
she is walking very slowly aswell and sleeping alot. She cries if the owner leaves the room even if there are other members of the family around.
Could this be the start of her going into labour..there are no contractions and she isnt panting.
- By STARRYEYES Date 16.01.11 21:29 UTC
temp can drop even lower usual to get a big drop ie 36.9 ish then a rise this is when they usually begin labour ..may be the start could take her a while even to her 63 day  I notice more that the eyes glaze over and go pink... you know the drill ....dont leave her alone.:)
- By toffeecrisp [gb] Date 16.01.11 22:28 UTC
shes never alone...the owner is with her 24/7 unless she goes for a shower etc.....she started taking her temp on day 56 its gone from 37.9 down to 37.0...Im just going to be at the birth to keep her company and help only if needed. My phone is on charge and a taxi will take me to hers when she starts.
My girl had a litter last year and although I kept lots of notes and temps etc, this girl is totally different but then thats to be expected:)
Im getting a bit excited now:)

should have said even when she goes for a shower there is always someone with her!!
- By STARRYEYES Date 16.01.11 23:23 UTC
oh lovely you will have to keep us all updated when she starts..
- By toffeecrisp [gb] Date 17.01.11 20:00 UTC
Friends girl has been panting and digging since 4am...shes very restless, tummy has gone hard and lumpy but the pups are still moving a little bit. No contractions of any kind at the moment. Is this normal??
She hasnt eaten anything today apart from scrambled egg, but is drinking. She has had several runny poos and tons of wees.

The panting has eased off considerably but she wont stay in the whelping box...she wants to be in the kitchen in the dog crate with the other dog...what do we do.

I never had this with my girl so Im a bit confused as to what to do as is her owner...who is asleep at the moment!!
- By STARRYEYES Date 17.01.11 21:00 UTC
you should keep her away from the other dog...get her back into the whelping room on a lead if you must  sometimes you need to be a little bit firm in what you want her to do as they can get a bit silly...she is in pain . Close the door so she cant get out.
The first pup is rarely born in  the whelping box so try putting the bedding you will be using to whelp on  the floor outside the box after pup is born carry pup into the whelp box and mum will follow she should then settle getting ready for the next pup
As long as she isnt contracting it will be a good while yet.
You should look for ripple down the back ..remember to keep an eye on the clock for when she does begin contracting.
Is the owner in the room asleep because if she is in another room Mum maybe stressing as she may want to be with her. I slept in the same room even when my hubby  watches mum as my girl wouldnt leave my side.

runny poos and not eating digging and panting ..sounds like puppies are on thier way.

What day is she on??
- By WestCoast Date 17.01.11 21:02 UTC
Take her back to the whelping room and stay with her.  She's not sure what is happening to her and doesn't want to be on her own. :(
Make sure that she has a covered and enclosed whelping box for when the pups arrive - she'll feel more secure.
- By toffeecrisp [gb] Date 17.01.11 21:19 UTC
Whelping box is warm and covered.....shes got a sack, not sure if its the water sack tho half in and half out but she wont push!!!
Keeps sitting on it. other dog is in kitchen and out of sight..owner has woken up but was in same room. Shes a day early. Bedding is out of box on floor...will def keep close eye on her
- By white lilly [gb] Date 17.01.11 21:19 UTC
i agree she needs to be in her room now when mist had her 1st pup i was asleep on the sofa in the next room mist could come into us as the room joined by 1 door hubby had just come in to turn tv down so i didnt wake up and has he went to get the remote mist screemed out i jump off the sofa and there was her 1st pup ,id only been asleep 20mins and hadnt seen any contractions but very small pushes and if her owner dont hear her doing this then she could very well end up being with the other dogs when shes having her 1st pup :( , all the best i hope it all goes well ,looks like a long night ahead for you both ,let us know how it all goes xxx
- By white lilly [gb] Date 17.01.11 21:21 UTC

water bag has gone..how soon should a puppy arrive..still no contractions although she is panting.
she seems to have sunk in at the sides....I dont remember having any of this with my girl last year.
Owner is going to ring the vet for advice
- By white lilly [gb] Date 17.01.11 22:52 UTC
still could be afew hours ,keep us posted im up for along time yet lol xxx all the best :)
- By MsTemeraire Date 17.01.11 23:01 UTC
Too early to panic, just be calm and chill.
I do know what it's like, cats not dogs here, but even after midwifing over 10 litters I still panic a bit and can't remember what I knew only hours before :)

Signs to look for are lots of contractions and pushing but no production. Doesn't sound like it's that far along yet. And believe me, even after more than a few litters of kittens I *still* believe I can't remember what a contraction looks like..... until one starts happening in front of me! :)
- By STARRYEYES Date 17.01.11 23:11 UTC
my girl pops puppies out without much effort ..just a few pushes.

watch for straining and pushes and remember to watch the clock..

sounds like puppies birth is imminent... good luck
- By toffeecrisp [gb] Date 17.01.11 23:14 UTC
vet advised leaving her to it and taking a step back...if my friend needs to take her in then its £150 consultation and then the cost of treatment on top....but at least she knows the cost.
he also said that although there are no outward contractions she will be having them inside as the water sack was passed and hes known pups be born 8/10 hours later.
- By MsTemeraire Date 17.01.11 23:15 UTC Edited 17.01.11 23:18 UTC
Sounds like a savvy vet there :) Good luck and remember you will be of most use to her if you are calm and relaxed! Cost isn't the foremost thing - it would be quite traumatic for her to be taken in, so keep that in the back of your mind, cos she needs you most of all at the moment :)
- By STARRYEYES Date 17.01.11 23:17 UTC
just give her a cuddle and watch the tele!!
- By MsTemeraire Date 17.01.11 23:19 UTC

- By STARRYEYES Date 17.01.11 23:37 UTC
I always have a tele in the whelp room....I dont leave the room for 7 wks ....LOL
- By white lilly [gb] Date 17.01.11 23:38 UTC
no need to panic and go to vets ,ive read of waters going 12h before 1st pup ,mist was about 6h i think xxx
- By white lilly [gb] Date 17.01.11 23:39 UTC
same here im in here for weeks so i need a tv to watch :)
- By toffeecrisp [gb] Date 17.01.11 23:40 UTC
i got a telly and a bed in mine at home:)
im sharing a settee and watching tv at firends house...we recorded NCIS earlier
- By MsTemeraire Date 17.01.11 23:43 UTC
Well don't you have it good...lol
Says she who only had a thermos flask and a good book for company during her last kittening ;)
- By toffeecrisp [gb] Date 17.01.11 23:46 UTC
ah but i sleep in the front room...my bed is a mattress on the floor!!
- By STARRYEYES Date 18.01.11 00:21 UTC
yes I have a matress on the floor too, as I turn my dining room into a whelp room and the table and chairs are put away up the stairs..
I would go mad without the tv esp when you have to keep awake ...so I watch films and record  tv progs I would miss during the day , if I read I go sleepy so I darent do that... I turn the light out and lie on the bed....sound like a wonderful life doesnt it except your up and down by the mins...!!
When hubby takes over from me he cant lie on the bed he lays in front of the whelp box on the floor as he panics too much and is scared of falling asleep....or more scared of me ..maybe...
- By toffeecrisp [gb] Date 18.01.11 00:33 UTC
lol...def more scared of you!!:)
- By white lilly [gb] Date 18.01.11 02:48 UTC
