Topic Dog Boards / Breeding / Newborn Birthing box???

Hi all, Im currently looking into a new whelping box for my girl. She has just been mated and we do have a whelping box which was ideal for when pups where 4-5 weeks onwards because there was plenty of space for them but it was a little too big for when they were newborn and it took up most of my living room!!!

Im looking for something that I can use for first few weeks then dispose of that and use my old pvc box once they are that little bit older and bitch stops cleaning up after them.

Ive just come across the newborn birthing box on net and was wondering what you guys thought of it, if you've used them before?
Was it OK for while the bitch was actually whelping? Did it get wet? Is the waterproof tray in the bottom any good?
How long did it actually last?

Any help would be great as I really dont want that huge thing in my living room for a whole 9-10 weeks again lol

Also, if you got an XL box, did you get a lid? I really think my girl would be more relaxed with a lid on top once babies are born.

Many thanks

I use them all the time because I don't breed that often and want something you can throw away at the end of it. They are great, quite sturdy. I have tiled floors so I use a base of towels undeneath the box for extra insulation. The waterproof base is fine, I've never had any problems with it. Then I line the base of the  box with newspaper and have a piece of vet bed in as well. Its made of double walled cardboard so its sturdy. Mine have never got wet, only the pig rails but I bought some wipe clean aluminium ones and they are fine.
I don't think the very big ones have lids but thats no problem, you can easily make your own from the box it comes in. I made mine into a pointy roof shape so I could see in easily rather than a flat roof. Duck tape it to the sides and it was great. Bitches always love it. After a week the roof comes off and a few weeks after that the pups are clambering out of the box. Once its over with I tend to burn the box.

Thanks Rocknrose I think I will give it a go. Anyone else got their opinions on them?
