Topic Dog Boards / Health / Spay/is this normal?

My bitch was diagnosed with cystic ovaries and had to be spayed whilst in season as she was having a prolonged season (months) and just not coming out. The spay was done 8 days ago but she still has a swollen vulva, is still
scent marking outside as if she is still in season, is this normal? Also today I noticed she has a small amount of brownish coloured discharge, I am not too sure if this is a new thing or it has been continual and I just haven't noticed it until now. She is ok in every other way but I'm wondering if her appearance of being in season is normal or not?

Because she was in season when spayed it is normal for the hormones to still be in the blood causing the softening of the vulva and the production of the 'in season scent' although your house will smell of that no matter how much of a spring clean you have. Would think the discharge is normal as well as the vulva still being open will allow that to act as a drainage channel. Not sure if you will need hormonal drugs to help tighten things up or if the lack of the female hormone will in good time deal with leftover signs of the season.

As always if worried talk to your vet.
