Hi my pups are now 34 days old and I have been feeding them solids for 10 days as large litter. They took to food - royal canin - well at first, nice firm poo's then last wednesday they started with the runs. I have since tried everything, chicken, rice, egg, pro-kolin, canikur (from the vets) and a dehydration liquid (also from vets). they start to improve so start adding RC then they go back to runs. vet said I'm doing everything right so why are they not solid! Any suggestions please?

have you wormed them? worming usually causes diarrhoea for a while

wormed last wednesday..drontal puppy worming suspension..

I had this with my pups, they got pretty bad with it and eventually needed antibiotics (Flagyl), that cleared it -nothing else did. I'd cut out the rice though as many dogs can't tolerate rice and get worse from it, use boiled chicken only.

Touch of giardia you think? Panacur can sort that out too, but at a different dosage.

can i get that as well? had bad (u no wot!) starved myself..... shall i give them another dose of wormer already?

I usually use panacur but thought this suspension would b easier 2 administer, should i have stuck with panacur-- I have some panacur @ home in granule form should I administer that or just wait till vets on weds?

It's possible but we didn't test -long story but just wanted them right ASAP -it all started off by me giving them a couple of Pedigree gravy bones each. Have since heard from two other friends who have had dogs get really bad from them as well.

For giardia I would only be using Panacur suspension 10%

have ordered panacur -- thanks for advice. 1 more Q how long can a dog have this giardia 4?
Have a young dog - only 14mnths old. ever since we'v had him he has had stool problems, nver firm, frequent, have tried a variety of foods thinkin he was havin problem with them-- wonderin now whether it is giardia-- have wormed him but always drontal tablets---

I have always dosed for 7 days for Giardia.  Always use Panacur 10% suspension.  If he is only 14 months - and you say that you have always wormed him, it sounds like he is being done too frequently.

I have never wormed monthly as advised.  And have gone way over before having faecal samples taken and sent off to Langford.  Never, ever came back with worms.

Unless you are sure that you are exercising in a risky environment, I don't see the need to keep pushing chemicals inside your dog.

My Border Collie has a sensitive tum and I mix tinned Chappie in with his dry complete food.  Suits his tummy just fine.

Just how often do you try him with different foods?  Try not to chop and change too much, as it will upset his tum even more.

If it IS giardia - which is a form of amoebic dysentery - then they can have it for as long as it takes for it to be recognised and dealt with. And they don't necessarily lose weight or fitness in the meantime. Gping back to cats again with which I have the most experience, my first queen had giardia throughout rearing her litter, which she did really well and didn't lose weight, but just had constant runs. Vets pumped every form of AB they could into her but nothing helped. It was only when the litter started having the typical frothy egg-smelly faeces that I went to another vet and was given Metronidazole [Flagyl] and it disappeared like magic. That was in the days when vets were told cats do not get Giardia, so Panacur wasn't listed for treatment. Flagyl does have side effects though and modern thinking prefers treating with a milder treatment such as Panacur.

Mine were similar with Royal Canin and only improved once I had replaced 75% of their Royal Canin with another brand of puppy food.

misunderstandin -- :) -- said I have always used drontal on him not always worming him -- obviously only use stated dose and timescales as I also don't like over medicating,
Have ordered panacur so will use that and hopefully we will c a difference.

update on pups
have stopped rice and feeding boiled chicken with small amount of soaked RC and so far no poo's @ all! Hopefully this will keep them goin till panacur arrives......
