Hi Everyone
Me mutt Dillon always bites and pulls his lead when in the ring waiting to be seen by the judge. And no matter what i try he will NOT stop it.

I have tried the following to try to stop him

jerking the lead out of his mouth and shouting NO or Leave it. (i dont like doing this as im scared of damaging a tooth)
shouting "leave it".
Shouting "NO".
trying to walk him along the short piece of mat that you have available whilst waiting to be seen by the judge.
giving him a whack whilst shouting at him.
washing up liquid on the lead.
anti persparent on the lead.
tickling him
smoothing him
talking to him
scruffing him
ignoring him
playing with him (which always leads to him grabbing the lead)
various combinations of all of the above

none of them work
he thinks its all a game and the harder i try to get him to leave it alone the more determined he becomes to keep it in his mouth
its as if he is oblivious to all around him and biting that lead is the only thing in the world

it is both embarresing and annoying mostly annoying
it is coming to a stage where i am going to have to take him out of the ring and withdraw from the class if it gets any worse as he refuses to let go

does anyone have any ideas how i can stop this pretty sharpish ??

Dillon is not one who will respond to "pretty please good boy" tactics and i cant shout at him as loud as i need to when standing in the ring

help please !!!!!!!!!!!

hi zigger i had this problem with a dog i was showing for my friend at birmingham earlier this year staff also. he came to stay with me 2 weeks before the show to get used to me showing him, first time out on the garden he was jumping all over biting lead and he looked like he was laughing at me. for 2 weeks solid everyday we would go out in the garden and practice when i moved him if he jumped up to bite the lead i would say stop say no and go back to the begining if he didnt try to get the lead i would give him a treat we spent hours at it. on the day of the show took him out side him jumping up grabbing lead i thought oh no. when we went in the ring and it came to my turn as i started to move him up he jumped i went back to the begining and started again he then moved lovely got placed second in graduate. yours is still a baby he was 2 years so just keep trying with he hell get there best regards gwen

If it's just in the ring while you are waiting to be seen by the judge then why don't you gather up all the lead in your hand and hold him close to his neck so that he can't do it :)

Pammy
in my experience Bitter apple and other like stuffs are like garnishs to dogs
they have never helped stop any of my previous dogs biting or chewing anything to be honest
more like encouraged them
as i stated, i have tried washing up liquid on the lead and this did stop him for a while
but i cant continue to put that on his lead as it makes it very slippery and that doesnt make it any easier to control him

i realise he is still a puppy but you havent seen how intense he can get when he gets that lead in his mouth :D
he is like a man possessed !!
i know he will get there in the end but i would like to be able to walk around the ring with all his four paws on the ground :) rather than having to drag him around with his lips wrapped round the lead trying to yank my arm off :p

As for gathering up the lead and holding close to the neck
no chance !!
he will go into complete nutter mode to get his mouth on that lead if i do that
ive tried it several times
it dont work

short of walking him out of the ring i have no idea how to stop it
everything i have tried has failed...............

Only one strange dog I know will go near anything rubbed with Tobasco sauce. All other dogs absolutely hate the stuff.
