Considering this was posted last night, I hope you have had some sound advice allready but if not....the puppies will automatically alternate when feeding and the bitch will make enough milk for them all.  Make sure she is getting frequent food and water so she has enough milk and let her do the rest naturally.  I would not intervene and supplement as then she will not naturally up her milk supply unless the pups lose a lot of weight.  Our bitch once had 12 pups and not enough nipples and I paniced like you but my mentor was fab and made me see how mother nature works thing out.  My bitch just now is sitting with 7 puppies(very good number!!) and even though they have enough teats for one each, they still feed at alternate times.  Usually there are only 4 eating at one time and a few days ago they had a day of them all eating and wimpering for the whole day which brought in more milk as you could see her teats were heavier after that day.  They are all happy fat puddings now!
Sorry edited to add, just realised this was this morning!! DOH!  That's what sleepless nights with puppies does to you!!

In the last three years Ive raised litters of 10, 11 and 13, obviously not enough teats there, and never had to supplement. I just switch the puppies about, weighing at least once a day and have a A team ( the heavier puppies) and a B team ( the lighter puppies). I just make sure anyone in the B team gets their fair share and eventually  moves into the A Team. I have post its on the whelping bed with collar colours on and anyone passing makes sure they plug in the puppies that are listed on the post its.

Helloall thanks so much for your help. It was just such a shock with her having eight plus I lost my nana on thursday unexpectdly so feel a bit lost with the pups. The smaller ones are always crying to get on the teats. I would say there are 4 usable teats..

We had to rotate the pups around with Sophie litter of 11.

My last litter had to be attended to constantly because the bitch had several inverted nipples which the babies couldnt pull out on their own.

After about 10 days of holding them on and rotation, they were able to manage on their own.

Hard work helping them all but it has to be done.

km worried that it maybe too much for her rearing that amount.

she should cope fine, i always say that they will only produce what they are physically capable of rearing as it is the bitches that decide quantities. My bitch raised 10 large breed puppies using only 7 nipples!

When I had a litter of 12 I had 6 on 6 off and rotated them every 1/2 hour for the first few days and nights and kept an eye on their weights.

So sorry to hear that you have lost a family member so close to Christmas.  Lost my Dad quite close to the "festive season" and found it unbearable.

You are bound to be doubting yourself, with your grief, lack of sleep, and worrying about your girl.

Take a deep breath!  Make sure mum is getting plenty of fluids down her.  If you have to put goats milk in with her water - do so - it will help her.

And just ensure that you latch new pups on to teats every half hour until you are sure that all are gaining.  You are going to be shattered, and look like a zombie.  :-(

But it has to be done!  Good Luck, and keep trying those pups and make sure you put loads of nutrition into mum.

I'm not a breeder but I just wanted to say keep up the great work you're doing :) And I'm sure it's going to be worth all that hard work & sleepless nights.
Maybe you could name one of the babes after your nana? x

thanks everyone for all your advice.

I think im going to have to seperate them into two groups as the big ones push the small ones off straight the way. I put them on 2 seconds later theyre crying again. I was thinking about putting 4 in a shoe box and 4 on mum then swapping every half houris this a good idea? Then leaving them all together at night.

The vet reccomended suplimenting but I know it isnt best yet unless they start losing.
The bitch is nakered and her legs keep trembeling is this normal?

Separating out the big ones until the little ones have had enough sounds like a good plan. I don't know about the leg trembling, keep an eye on her in case it's a sign of eclampsia developing.
