I have been breeding for a number of years using someone elses stud dog, I would like to own my own stud, But feel that i need to know all the ins and outs,
at what age do you start them, How long between matings, and is it a good idea to kennel with a bitch, I would like as much information as possible, So i can then decide wether to buy a stud or just keep using other peoples.
By the way i breed westies.

Iwould like to thank you in advance for what im sure will be invalueable help.

Would buying in the stud not cause a few problems if you have several bitches.

IS there any real reason why you would want to buy in the stud rather than careful selection of good quality studs?

These are all the questions you would have to answer first before you decided. You may have done so.

Also if you buy in a male dog and he then is not a very good dog and to the standard he would not be suitable for breeding from so you would then be faced with either buying another puppy dog in or using an inferior stud dog.

Can I ask if you show your westies? How do you noramilly select your studs as this may help in your answer.

Pam.

A lot depends on how your bitches are bred, if the same dog would be suitable for all of them. And of course, what their individual virtues and faults are. We have 3 or 4 stud dogs, but still use other dogs if they are more suited to the individual bitch in question.
