Topic Dog Boards / Breeding / Pet passport meds on bitches just mated

Hi

I just read on an old thread here that folk were recommending Frontline not be used on pregnant bitches; people were saying they then absorbed litters.

We're going to take our bitch abroad to be mated so will need to flea and tick on the way back. I'm guessing this isn't a problem as I know several of you have done this.

Which products are best to use for the tick and worming meds on the way back?  I will bring our own with us to make sure we use those.

Are people not concerned about the use of these products on v recently bred bitches?

Thanks

I wanted to avoid this and stress of travelling for the bitch(she had missed the previous time already) so opted for paying for the male to travel to UK instead of us traveling :)
As he held a passport and the owners were willing to do this, of course it is not an option most of the time.

I could be totally wrong but if the bitch is treated few days after the mating the possible babies are not yet connected so would not be affected?

That would be the case, the first trimester the embryo's are not connected to teh bitches blood suppky.

I wanted to minimise the chemicals so have Droncit with me, that only contains the required praziquantel for tapes, and have Effipro (generic Frontline, who no longer have exclusive rights to Fipronil, the active ingredient).

I also opted to use the DAP sprayon the shipping crate, don't know if it helped, but she was very relaxed when we got off the plane.

Thanks guys.

Actually, the stud dog owner in passing suggested that the dog could have a trip to us...  I had thought against this at the time, as I've read that it's important for the dog to feel confident and able to get it up as it were (!) and the best chances of that were in his own environment.  However, I'm sure most stud dogs would be fine.

The other thing though is that we are novice breeders whilst the stud dog owners are v experienced breeders and it would be good to have them there to manage the tie and the mating.

Finally, he doesn't have a Pet Passport but we wouldn't be going over till the end of July so in theory he could still get one between now and then - but I guess we would have to pay for this expense, as it's not done for his owners' benefit but ours.

Thanks for the tips Barbara, I will get some Droncit and Frontline.  Is Frontline better than Advantix on pregnant bitches?

The Pet Travel scheme insists on specific chamicals: praziquantel has to be in the wormer and for ticks it states: The product used for the tick treatment must be licensed for use against ticks and have a marketing authorisation in the country of use. Tick collars are not acceptable.
