As some of you know my elderly lab has been going on a treadmill and it has been doing her good, her mobilty has improved, however today she went into the pool with a life jacket, staff also go in the pool, well Sadie was so stressed she had to come out within two and half mins, once out of the pool she was very wobberly on her back leg even worse than,I am afraid that all the good work has been undone, fingers crossed no damage has been done.

If her backlegs are the problem, then the treadmill is a better option anyway as they don't use the backlegs too much when swimming. I would just stick to the treadmill.

Unless she hurt herself on entry or leaving the pool, then it's unlikely that there was any harm done whilst in the pool. I may be wrong, but I thought swimming was one of those exercises that it's nigh on impossible to damage yourself with. My girls get really excited watching the boy fetching his toys in the pool, but once in themselves their enthusiasm wains significantly!

Fingers crossed your girl is just a bit shaken up by the change and hasn't done herself a mischief!

She was really in a state of panic and was swimming very fast and strong indeed, she did not swim at her own pace as she normally does in our local lake,I will not let her go in the pool again the hydrotherepist could see what was happening that why we had to take her out of the pool,I feel so guilty as she was doing so well, definatley the tread mill next week.

I had my dog at hydro last year and I stopped going as he was so stressed in the pool, he did improve but it certainly wasn't a pleasant experience for him, when he came out he was a bit wobbly too, the therapist said a lot of dogs did it ( she referred to it as " disco legs " lol ) and it was just the same thing as we get when we come out of a swimming pool.

I would say two and a half minutes is to long for a first time. When a took my collie the ladies started him off with just a minute and a little next time up to five minutes.
Its a shame because it does them the world of good.

The treadmill is the best treatment for Sadie as it is making her use different muscles, she is still not walking very well after her swim, she loves swimming but not in nice warm pools, very strange but thats labs, bless her she is 13,
