Topic Dog Boards / Feeding / Chappie and Vitalin
- By Phoebedor [gb] Date 09.12.10 14:38 UTC
Hi, my vet has recommended the above for my 20 month old WS bitch.  He told me that tinned Chappie is 'the best food on the market'.  I am VERY doubtful but on asking have found a number of people who have fed this mix for the past 20 years plus and all their dogs have not had any problems and have lived long and happy lives.  Any one else out there who will admit to feeding it??!!

Yes, I do, and I know several other people who do too. Chappie is an excellent food.

Have had a number of GSDs through my hands who could only eat tinned Chappie anything else upset their systems. Makes a big change for a vet to be advising Chappie and not trying to get you on to some expensive food you can buy from them.

Although I basically fed raw, tinned Chappie is what I used when I travelled with my dogs.

Though my girlies are raw fed I would have no problem feeding Chappie in an emergency it is one of the best tinned foods...Vitalin however is another story I used to feed my GSD's on it years ago (25) as it was one of the cheapest...finances where not what they are now! and one of the few around then and the stuff that came out the far end can only be described as Vitalin soup!!!!Needless to say I changed to something else asap!! Maybe it has improved but I would not like to try it again.

Our Vet has also suggested and recommended Chappie, I have always heard good things about it.

I feed half wet, half dry for my lot.  I found that tinned Chappie was the only one that suited the delicate tum of my Border Collie.  And I take no notice of anyone who says it's cheap and cheerful.  When my BC boy goes for his annual health check, the vet always makes a comment about his lovely coat and super condition.

So Jill - lots of us will admit to feeding it!!  :-)

My referral specialist also recommended tinned Chappie for my GSD with Inflamm BD, very good food

I'm another one who was recommended Chappie by a vet. She said that it's because they are rigid with what is put into it, rather than using whatever "meat" is available at the time. As it's constant it's better tolerated - not sure how accurate this is, but it makes sense.

My lot are actually now fed CSJ, and this is tolerated by my boy just as well as chappie, but if I need to top him up if he's getting a bit ribby, I tend to add some CHappie and there's never any problems.

Chappie is an excellent food for dogs with delicate tums and dogs who suffer with bladder stones or crystals in thier urine.

I've fed Chappie before and yes my vet advised it instead of one of the expensive
vet prescription diets that they also sell.

Yes when you read the label for the list of ingredients it doesn't read that it's a
'good' food especially when people say 'grain-free', 'raw' etc is best, to go for foods that have
No artificial colours, preservatives, BHA. BHT, Ethoxyquin etc.

If it works for your dog and they are happy and healthy that's all that matters.
Not what it says on the list of ingredients or the price it costs to buy
(prices have increased over the years).

Infact I still have tins in now even thou I can't feed it to one of my dogs due to dietry intolerances.
As it's still very useful for recovery after a dog has had an upset tummy or for dogs
after they've had an operation.

I wouldn't have any qualms in feeding it, if that's what my dog needed.
It also works out much cheaper than some of the more expensive vet prescription diets.
For people that don't have lots of money it's worked out well for them and their dog.
I'm glad that it's still on the market :)

Just to clarify, do you all recommend Chappie original or is their tinned chicken and rice ok too?

(I used Chappie original for my dog during post op recovery - it was his doggy equivalent of invalid or comfort food  "I'm so poorly, I shall just lay here groaning whilst you feed me with a teaspoon" !! )

That's good to know; so the chicken & rice one is better suited to dogs who might be iffy with wheat gluten.

I agree with the others, I've never had a problem with either.

Sshh dont tell them but the entire household is managed around their needs.   I even found myself telling the kids (well 14 & 15 yrs) they weren't allowed to go near the utility room the other day - cos the puppy was finally asleep!!  Perhaps my early puppy mornings have sent me over the edge? :)

No its not.  Chappie is an excellent food for many problems but none is any good for dogs with wheat/gluten intolerance.
