Topic Dog Boards / Breeding / Pregnant Bitch wont take panacur
- By KaneFizz [gb] Date 07.12.10 19:22 UTC
Hello I have been trying to worm my girl with Panacur she is day 48 and I cant get her to eat anything with panacur in. I've tried everything chicken, sardines, cheese, white fish, Ham. As soon as she knows it has panacur in she wont go near it.

Would it be ok to syringe it into her mouth? She is toy breed and only needs 0.7mls per day. I have missed 3 days of the raigme because I jusr dont know what to do.

yes has long as shes ate right before give it her right away by syringe she will be fine :) xx

I don't use panacur but on the occasions when my girlies need pills (Worming etc) I get some nice smelly smooth pate and they get them it that, never had a failure so far. It is nice and easy to mould round a pill and I always give an inocent piece first then they are so keen to get more they gobble them down without a murmur !!! I find some garlic pate is the best by far. You can always crush large pills for little dogs and mix it all up before making "balls" of it.

The only way we can get ours to take panacur is by syringe, the vet showed me how to do it and I had no problems from day 40 when she was in pup.

With cats & kittens, very often the only way is to syringe Panacur as they are so suspicious about food with it in! However the last time I did that my clothes, the floor, the cats' exteriors and unbelieveably, the ceiling, got Panacur'd as well!

lol..they are very good at spray painting arent they!!
Our cat does exactly the same, it takes 2 of us to worm her.

This is for a pregnant bitch, so pills are not an option.  The only wormer licensed for use on a pregnant bitch is Panacur suspension.

I have toys too, and normally try to hide it in food.  But if they go off their food, as they are dosed from day 40, I don't worry too much if they miss one or two days (due to not eating food.)  However, I don't think I would wait longer than 3 days.  Yes, use a syringe.  And, as she is going to object, try it in 2 or 3 goes (you don't tend to waste so much!)  :-)

Pregnancy and lactation
MILBEMAX can be used in breeding dogs including pregnant and lactating bitches.

full fact sheet here:-
http://www.vetgb.com/vetgb_pdfs/milbemax_b3f9_vetgb.pdf
Milbermax is now licenced for use in pregnant bitches, this is copied from the product fact sheet.
So it is a pill you can use....But not on Collies!

The poster has toys.  The fact sheet advises that Milbemax cannot be used on puppies under 0.5kg and many of mine don't weigh that at 10 weeks.  So starting at 14 days would be unsuitable for my breeds.  Also, it advises that it is not for adult dogs under 5kg.  My toy breeds are very much less than that as adults.  Even when heavily pregnant!  :-)

Unfortunately, my 3 large dogs are Collies!!!!!

i use panacur granules on my bitches food. they dont seem to notice. you need to ask vet what grams to use but its from day 40 everyday till 3 days after whelping. easy
- By JeanSW Date 07.01.11 23:09 UTC
Are you sure about this?  Panacur suspension, not granules, is the licensed wormer for pregnant bitches.

And the correct dosing is from day 40, to TWO days post whelp.
- By nic76 [gb] Date 07.01.11 23:13 UTC
totally sure. i went thorugh the vet with both pregnancies and have also looked it up on the web

taken from several websites selling panacur granules...

Pregnant Bitches
For the treatment of pregnant bitches to reduce prenatal infections with Toxocara canis and the transfer of T. canis and Ancylostoma caninum to their pups via the milk.

I stand corrected!  :-)

When you get as old as me, you seem to keep on doing the same old, same old, and I've used Panacur suspension 10% for donkeys years.

Have you got a dosing chart for pregnant bitches?  Just as curiousity, as I don't get my vet to work out doses, I do my own (but I am very, very old!)  :-)
- By nic76 [gb] Date 07.01.11 23:23 UTC
yep give me a minute and i will find it for you

Pregnant dogs
Administer 25mg fenbendazole per 1kg (2.2lbs) bodyweight daily from day 40 of pregnancy continuously to 2 days post-whelping (approximately 25 days).
Practical dosage recommendations:
1 g sachet /dose

Treats 8kg (17.6lb) bodyweight dosed daily for approx. 25 days
1.8 g sachet / dose

Treats 16kg (35.2lb) bodyweight dosed daily for approx. 25 days
4.5 g sachet /dose

Treats 40kg (88lb) bodyweight dosed daily for approx. 25 days
For bitches weighing over 40 kg, additional sachets are required according to the additional bodyweight.
As this treatment of pregnant dogs is 98% effective, puppies from these dogs should themselves be treated with a 3 day course at 2 and 5 weeks of age with Panacur 2.5% or 10% Liquid or Panacur Paste. Treat the bitch at the same time at the routine adult dose rate (i.e. 100mg/kg as a single dose)

not sure if i can post the company i use but was the cheapest after going vets
- By JeanSW Date 07.01.11 23:36 UTC
You're a gem!  I've copied it to a word document so I can check through, but it looks as if my smallest breed would only need 50gms a day (approx.)

I already get the suspension direct from a pharmaceutical company, so no problem getting it.

Thanks for looking it up for me.

For those bitches who steadfastly will not take it in their food I use a syringe.

I keep the bitches mouth closed, poke the end of the syringe between the lips through the back teeth and squirt.

If stroking the throat does not make the swallow (Myka can sit there for ages with the stuff in her mouth) then I blow on the nose while still holding muzzle closed and this will induce them to wan to lick and they will swallow.

I will not dose on an empty stomach so give them their breakfast first either with something yummy in their food or this way.

I appreciate that getting 5 to 10ml down this way works fine, any more and you would have to do it in more than one shot.  Luckily my pregnant bitch dose is 5ml.  When I actually worm them I do it in two 10ml goes.

From what I can see the Granules are still 2 days post-whelp. I guess it depends on the size of your dog. For me granules would work out quite a bit more expensive than the suspension - but I can get my dogs to take the suspension. But then if your dog refuses the suspension, then even if the granules work out more expensive they're not going to be as expensive as non-consumed wormer! But it's useful to know the granules are useable or pregnancy.

Unfortunately our dogs aren't stupid, they can sniff out a tablet and eat everything but what we want. :-) My girl will normally allow me to just pop one in her throat and rub it down, but whilst in whelp I found a better way. ;-) Wrapped in ham, chicken, scrambled egg, fish, cheese, she either wouldn't eat it or ate everything else but just left the broken up tablet, but fresh minced meat rolled in a ball with the broken tablet in the middle, she would wolf down, so worth a try.

Syringe will be fine, but give the mince meat a go.
- By Brainless [gb] Date 11.01.11 13:23 UTC
Panacur does not come in tablet form, only suspension or more expensive granules.  There is the past in graduated syringes for puppies, but I buy in bulk by the litre or half litre to do everyone.

It has a long shelf life so usually lasts me two years, I also let freinds have doses at cost.

I feed tabs with a small piece of bread covered in butter pop the tab in the middle then squeeze together they have never noticed ..too busy licking the butter around thier lips!
