Topic Dog Boards / Health / Looks like bad dandruff

Hi... Tansy has developed what looks like dandruff, and lots of it. She isn't itchy with it, but it is all stuck in her fur and looks quite unpleasant. Its like she is shedding flakes of skin. Any ideas what this is and how it can be treated? I will take her to the vet if needs be, but don't want or need the expense if it is simply treated....thanks

If I were you I would get to your vets to find out, could be any number of things, and to be able to treat you need to know what it is.

Sounds like it could be cheyletiella - http://vetmedicine.about.com/od/diseasesandconditions/a/CW-Cheyletiella.htm

I had a litter of pups this summer that picked this up and it was cleared very quickly with Advocate. You need to see your Vet to get this sorted out.

Is she moulting? One of mine gets this sometimes when she's shedding - coat goes quite dull too. Having said that they should be bald at the moment, the amount of hair I'm hoovering up, and no sign of the dandruff.

Yep... she is losing fur all over the place!! My living room looks like I own 10 flippin' dogs lol. I shall take her to the vet in case its that cheyletiella thingy. Walking dandruff.... yuck. The thought makes my skin crawl.....
Thank you for your advice :-)

Mine get dry skin when they moult too - it's natural, and a bath sorts it out.
If you have a magnifying glass, pluck a clump of hair out with your fingers and put it onto white paper.  Watch for a minute or so and if it's cheyletiella you'll see it move! :) :)  You can either sort it with benzyl benzoate if you have any (not too easy to buy these days) or you'll need a trip to the Vet.
If it doesn't move, I'd try a good bath and dry with a hairdryer first to see if that does the trick. :)

I had tried the bathing already (twice) but the pups coats were still not right so off the the Vets I went.  Never used Advocate before but couldn't believe how quickly it worked and how well the pup's coats looked after.  Hope you find an answer to your problem :-)

Have you changed foods in the last few weeks?

I found my dogs had this problem when I changed from a Chicken-based food to a Lamb-based food.  I couldn't believe the difference it made   checked for walking dandruff and it wasn't that.    Changed back to chicken-based food and it cleared up very quickly!

Don't know why mine are affected by Lamb like this, but as it's easily avoided I don't stress over it now ;)
