An overseas friend was telling me they are coming to Crufts in 2011.......I queried their dogs passport as I KNEW he was exported recently without one that would allow him to re-enter UK......he told me its not a problem as they are travelling to Crufts with a specialist firm that organises overseas dog show trips, it does all the paperwork and makes arrangements for all passports to be backdated so they are "valid"!!!!! WTF do we even BOTHER to try and keep UK rabies free??? :(

Maybe a word to DEFRA might be in order Sam, if you know the name of the firm!
It beggars belief what some will do.

Good God, that's frightening! I would have no hesitation in ringing the appropriate authorities and tipping them the wink about the company, no thought for the welfare of anyone else.

Umm maybe this is why people in Spain seem to think that they can easily bring a dog into here when I was querying importing one.  They didn't seem to believe me when I said that they had to keep them for nearly 9 months.

mmmm but im wondering how i find out the name of the company without giving away what Im planning?

Not sure what you said to your friend, but you could go along the lines of " I mentioned this to another friend in ...blank.... country and they would like to know the company you use. Can you give me details so I can pass them onto them".  That's if you've not already said you disagree with what they are doing..

I think more of this goes on than we know!  A friend in pastoral group was offered a puppy last year from abroad and when she said yes the breeder said she would bring pup over when she came to Crufts, friend said 'but she will only be 3 months old she wont be eligible yet' and was told it wasnt a problem as they are handed the scanner at the port to scan the dogs in the back of car themselves and no-one would know the pup was there!!!!!!!  Needeless to say my friend being the sensible person she is said no way!  Apart from the obvious quarantine problems it pisses me off that folk are doing this when I think what it cost us to board our bernese in Spain for 10 months!  Certainly doesnt pay to be honest.

When I was brining my two home from a non-EU country that bordered Greece, I was told by other expats that the best way to avoid quarantine would be to drive to Greece start the Passport for Pets process, then when the six months was up drive the dogs back to Greece and fly them back to the UK from there, and no one would be the wiser.  A couple of Greek vets were recommended.  I decided to go through the normal legal quarantine process in the UK - the dogs not me, lol.

We have a big problem in my part of Spain with abandoned and unwanted dogs (and cats) of all breeds, including pedigrees.  Very rarely a vet will "sort the passport out" for an animal who has been offered a home outside of Spain (very often Germany or Denmark).  The vets who treat these rescue animals are genuine and caring.  I can only assume that breeders of pedigrees are using a different "class" of vet who can be bought off if the price is right.  It makes me angry.

I heard something along these lines a while ago but didn't believe it at the time.  I was told that you could take several dogs back to the UK only saying you had one dog, they give you the scanner to check the one dog which you do and you're on your way.  No one actually checks how many you have in the car.  In this particular case all the dogs had valid passports but the person didn't want to pay for all of them!!  To be honest I didn't believe it, I thought the system was a lot stricter than this but perhaps not!

thats all true Jan, weve brought hounds thru the tunnel many times now and only once, the 1st time, did they come to the vehicle to scan them, every other time ive just gone to the office and asked for the scanner and taken it to the car myself, scanned and then taken it back to the office. i guess its a chance youd take on getting caught if you tried to bring more than one thru. The penalties however would far outway any risk that id ever want to take, so always declare the correct amount and pay for them.

Has anyone ver had an problem with confusion over tiem zones.

New York are 6 hours behind mainland Europe and five horus behidn us in tiem.

I wuill be leaving US on 21st on an early evening flight and arriving Belgium 8am next morning but only  soem 8 hours later.

This means I will need to get the tick and tapes meds and signatures on the afternoon of the 20th (so assuming before 5pm).

My ferry home is at 6pm Belgian time.

My worry is that the checkers at Dunkirk will look and think tick and tapes done on 20th at 4pm, now 5pm on 22nd, out of time, where in fact we will still have 5 or 6 hours.

IIf I get ticks and tapes done on morning of 21st say 10am, it will be 4pm Belgian time so 2 hours more than 24 hours before our ferry home, at 6pm on 22nd, and if they don't get the time difference it won't matter as they will think it was 32 hours not 26 sicne the vet signed.
