Topic Dog Boards / General / Carbon monoxide Poisoning Symptoms in Dogs

In our news lately there have been a few reports of CO poisoning or dodgy gas fires and the CO detectors etc.

I was wondering what the symptoms are in dogs and how long they last for. What to look out for as I did read it often shows in the animals first as there small size can make them sicker sooner than people might me. Hubby got us a gas fire and the CO monitor went off once but never again and I was wondering about it since the dogs often sit in the same room as he when it is on..

Cheers

you could buy a canary lol

think symptoms are same as for humans .  if you are worried get the fire checked though. not worth taking chances.

We have a coal fired rayburn and in very windy weather our CO alarm use to go off several times during the winter, always in the middle of the night when the fire has been stoked up and is on 'slumber'.

One time we went down after being wakened by the alarm and found 2 of our cats half dead on the floor infront of the rayburn.  They had been sick.  We opened all the doors and windows and took them out onto the patio.  They both recovered without any long term damage.

The installers of the appliance then added a special cowl ontop of the flue and although we have had very high winds we haven't had further problems and the cats seem fine.
