Topic Dog Boards / Behaviour / Dog sitting, best way to settle dog?
- By Pookin [gb] Date 11.11.10 21:40 UTC
Hi all, I've agreed to look after my friends dalmation pup for two weeks over Christmas and New Year while he goes on to visit his friends, she will be around 10/11 months then.
Would she settle quicker if I went to pick her up from the owner or if he brought her up to me and stay a night or two with her?
My gut tells me that if he brings her up she'll be feel more abandoned when he leaves than if I take her away, what are your experiences?

I have only done it once, a friends dog came to us for a month, made sure she knew us before she came to stay, Took her for walks alone or with our two, she also came to play in the garden, on the day I went to fetch her, took her for a short walk with ours before we all went home.

She comes up to visit fairly regularly when my friend comes to stay so she knows my lot well and they all get on together nicely (we always give them a walk altogether before we go into the house too). Just worried about her pining for him if he brings her up then leaves because she goes to work with him and is very attached.
Do you think me fetching her would be better than her being dropped off by her owner?

I would probably fetch her, less fuss, take some of yours with you (don't know how many you have) so she is distracted, I'd get her in the car and leave with as little fuss as possible. Understandably your friend will be upset/concerned but you can always talk on the phone latter. Good luck, her anxiety will probably ease once she is with your pack,

Hi,

I always think it's less stressful for a dog to be picked up and taken from somewhere rather than taken somewhere that isn;t home and then hgave their woner leave them, they tend to spend much ore time watching the place/direction that their owner left if done that way especially if they are very focussed on their people.  I would definitely go and get her, sure ot would be less stresssful for her :-)
