Hello All I plan to spey my toy bitch. I had her mated 2 weeks ago so I'm not sure if she infact pregnant but what I would like to know is. If she was pregnant and had a successful litter when could she be speyed? I am currently in the process of changing vets for various reasons they said when the puppies are eight weeks, is this correct as I though it seems a little much to have gone through all that and then have to go through a operation when there bodies are still trying to get strong again.

When have you had your bitches speyed after a season.

I am thinking about waitng until her next season after the pups.

Obvs if she isnt pregnant I can get her speyed as normal.

P.S Has anyone had a pre-anastetic blood test to make sure the bitch will be ok with it?

I usually spay mine at about 11 weeks after the pups are born, basically as soon as the milk has definitely gone.

Mine is a coated breed and they loose their coats totally after a litter, and are not fit to be shown until about 5 - 6 months after the pups are born.

The same usually happens after spaying (so again unfit to show for months) so I prefer to get it over with in one go as that way they can be shown.

I have toy breeds, and wouldn't have them spayed when pups are 8 weeks.  My toy breeds still have milk at this stage.

So I agree with Brainless, wait an extra couple of weeks.  Never have a bitch spayed when she has milk, even if it is a phantom pregnancy.

If she isn't pregnant, then mid way between seasons is the easiest.  There are far fewer blood vessels for the vet to tie off when they aren't raging with hormones.  If it's easier for the vet, that makes it a quicker operation for your girl - and less anaesthetic required.

I had my LB bitch speyed 12 weeks after her litter too. Thats a good time because its roughly half way before her next season hopefully. :)
