Topic Dog Boards / Feeding / Cooked vegetables as training treats

I was looking at using small pieces of cooked vegetables as training treats, such as carrots, parsnips. What other "healthy" training treats would people advise?

Why cook them?  They're nice and solid raw, don't go to mush, and my two love them.  Carrots, sugar snap peas, beans, cherry tomatoes, cucumber, apple, banana, pear, etc, etc, anything tid bit size......

Just remember though, even raw fruit and veg has calories, and should be counted as part of their daily calorie intake.

>> cherry tomatoes

We grew hanging baskets of cherry tomatoes this year, and we kept finding Disy with them, turns out she was popping out into the garden and picking her own!

yep, mine were the same!  Don't let her eat the green tomatoes, they contain much higher levels of solanine, which can exacerbate arthritis.  Once tomatoes turn red, the solanine levels diminish, and they contain something called lycopene, which is what gives them that red colour, this is actually a very good natural ingredient, containing something called free radicals.

We found green ones in her bed, so she was picking them but not eating them, red ones were thoroughly munched.

All my outside tomatoes and a big bed of strawberries have been eaten by the girls ! I did laugh though as I had an outdoor jalapeno pepper plant which Betty the youngest decided was fair game and she came inside with a look of absolute disgust on her face ! :-P

Yes agree use raw veg rather than cooked :-)

I agree why cook them? Mine love raw veggies they eat carrots, peas, cauliflower, brocoli ect and they also love fruit as well- mind you if I have cooked ones as left overs I do give them that as well :-) No grapes or rasins of course.. They are not to fond of banana's lol
