Hi my son bought me a Cavilier spanial and the breader told him he had to register the dog himself, we have found out that this is not the case but after confronting the breeder we now understand she is not interested in discussing the matter further. We are unable to register the pup ourselves, we have not been given any regesrtration documents from the breeder, we were giving the full pedigree and have contacted the KC club and found both the mother and father of the pup are both regestered, although not to the breeder or the address we bought the pup from. We paid £300 for the pup and I feel let down that I can not get any further, can anyone advise me what to do next.

If the owner of the dam & sire have not registered the dogs with the KC in their name then they can't register the puppies. It may be that they bought the dogs from the original owners but I am a bit concerend that they may have been stolen. No help I know as I have no idea what if anything you can do about it. If you can find out who the owners of the affix of the dam & sire you could try contacting them to see if the dogs were sold. If you can post the names of the parent dogs on here someone may well be able to point you in the right direction. Take membership of the board there is no charge and you will be able to answer our questions and we may be able to help. Jackie

It realy depends on what you are looking for - a registration, or some form of compensation for disappointment? If the breeder owns the bitch, and either owns the dog or has thepermission of the registered owner of the dog, then you could offer to pay for your pup to be registered, if it is very important to you. They will have to register the bitch in their name, which will cost £10, and then £12 to register your puppy. As long as the bitches transfer is dated for before the mating took place, and your puppy is under 12 months old, there should not be a problem. I understand from your post that the breeder does not want to discuss the matter further - if the advertised the pup as registered, they realy have no option but to discuss! You can also contact your local Trading Standards - did your son buy the pup from an ad in the paper? It would be useful to get a copy of the ad, and check the actual wording. Did the breeder have lots odf dogs? It could be that the suggestion that you will contact Trading Standards and Enviromental Health will galvanise the breeder into action.

Did the person selling the cavalier puppy advertise the puppy as Kennel Club registerd ? If they did then you should contact your local Trading Standards office. It is illegal to offer a puppy for sale stating that it is Kennel club registered if in fact at the time the advert is placed it is not. Sometimes you will see KC reg applied for, that is ok and acceptable. However the person who sold the puppy to you may well be 'buying in' puppies acting as an agent dealer or selling on behalf of a friend. If ads have appeared frequently advertisng pups for sale with the same number then contact your local Environmetal Health Officer because they would need a pet shop licence.
If you write to the KC giving them details of the puppy and dam and sire they should be able to advise you if a litter of puppies has been registered recently by the person owning the dam. It maybe that some of the litter were registered and others not.
at the end of the day much depends on the wording of the advert and what was said at the time of sale. Did you not ask to see the mother of the pups, if the mother not there or excuses as to why not then really it is buyer beware.
If you wish to email me off line I maybe able to help further
