Topic Dog Boards / Breeding / New Mum not cleaning pups

Hi

I hope there is someone out their who can offer me a little help and advice.  I had a litter born last night and the Mum doesnt seem interested in cleaning the pups.  She is making them wee but doesnt seem to want to clean up pooh (not that I can blame her really :-) )
She is feeding them and they are doing well but I have to keep cleaning them, dont get me wrong I dont mind but just wondered if there is something I could try to encourage her to do this.  The Book of The Bitch says try sunflower oil or honey which ive tried but she just looks at me.  This is her first litter.

Is there anything I can do to encourage this.

Thanks

My girl had the same problem, so I held the puppies up in front of her, sort of presenting their bottoms to her, and she very quickly got the hang of it.  They were held upright and facing her, so I think she found it easier to lick them, rather than having the tail in the way.

Thanks she is sometimes doing it now so hopefully will carry on.  Other than that they and her are doing brilliantly :-)

My Lexi was horrified at the idea of having to clean the pups in her first litter and really didn't want to do ti but did with the next.  Had to tidy up for her for the first day or two.
