The B***dy cheek of some people!!!
Just had a call 10 mins ago from a woman wanting to use my dog for stud and when I explained that he has been a bit busy recently and also my 2 girls are in season so he is stressing himself out and has lost an awful lot of weight so I am giving him a few months off she took the huff with me and said she had been waiting for 5 months for her girls season so she could use him. I refused and explained my situation very politely but she got so rude!!!! I'm sorry but he is my dog and he needs a flipping rest to sort his head out and put on some weight!!!!! Also if she has been waiting for so long why wait until her girl is on day 7 to contact me!!!! Moron!!!
LOL ,you get it off your chest! im the same with my boy at the moment, with our 2 girls he knows their going to come into season because hes not eating proply ,i just hope its the girl im waiting on and not her sister :( ...will be glad when he starts eatting well again because hes lost abit of weight too ,some people just dont have a clue do they ,i too agree she should of told you on day 1 so you could sort it out with her x
If she had'nt contacted you prior to her girl coming into season , what does she expect ! good on you for not caving in , i have had similar conversations and have said "really sorry" but if you are wanting to use him , can you wait till the next season if not i am sorry but i wish you luck in finding a suitable stud at short notice .

Did you have any idea that she'd like to use your boy?
If not then i'm at a loss how anyone can expect you to even think about agreeing at such a late stage. Surely if they'd done their homework then a call to you to even see if you were happy using your boy..Tsk...
Some people think that its their right to use what ever dog they like, as if the owner of said dog doesn't have any say in it at all..:-(
No Ive not heard from her previously. Whenever I get any calls asking about him I write all the owners and bitches details in my stud dog's diary at the time of the call and a corresponding note at about the time the girl is due in season just so if he does need to be taken off duty I can contact anybody who has shown an interest asap before they ring me to book him.

With you on this one. If I want to use a dog, I ask the owner months before my bitch is due in season & would also contact day one of season to reconfirm. Some people think the world revolves around them!!

I have always approached stud dog owners at least several months (if not a year) if not longer before wanting to use their male.
We can compare notes on the lines etc and think about things.
What right has someone to assume the dog will be available at short notice.

blimey...your stud dog has a diary???? he must be a hell of a dog.....is he a really top winner then?

The champion male I am waiting to use is 7 years old, sired his first litter in May, just mated his second bitch and waiting on mine to come in season.
It's like busses none for hours then three come at once.
I think his owners can just about remember, but it's probably a good idea to note when a bitch is due in season in case it slips your mind.
ive had a couple recently. one was a woman who sounded rough and very scary saying she had a bitch in season at home and was 'up for it' !! i asked her where she got my number from she said my vet (going to have him for this)
another was a man who said he watched me at crufts and got my details from the catologue, he sounded lovely and very polite, cut the story short... when i questioned him further it turns out hes ringing for a friend, who has a pet, wants to cross it and due in season the next week:( and yes they get very cross when the answer is no!

I just ask for copies of all the bitches current health certificates...... puts most people off and educates them into the bargain.

Ha Ha, that made me chuckle!
I have a small pocket diary for each of my dogs and horses. I write down their weight each month and when they are wormed/vaccinated/tested and what with and any change in appetite.

Well done for sticking to your guns. Your boy is what's important to you, not whether her nose is out of joint, specially as she hadn't previously enquired. When I mated Ellie both times I had already asked the stud dog owner months before if she would allow me to use him, told her roughly when Ellie was due in season, and then told her again when she started. Mind you thanks to madam being impossible to tell apart from Idex when to take, we still ended up with frantic phone calls of 'we need to come NOW!' :-D

I have had a recent b****y cheek person too!
Had a call one evening from someone that had found a cheap stud. She said they had visited, and were going back in 3 days, as the male wouldn't do anything!
But, in the meantime, as I was used to handling maiden bitches, could she come over that night to see if my boy was any better!
Oh yes, and could I drop the stud fee to half price, as she only wanted a pet litter. Stud fees on my toy breeds aren't much anyway.
Then the real gem! The other stud dog owner said she could pay the stud fee after the litter was sold!

I just asked her if she had a spare £1,000 in the bank, just in case her bitch needed a C-section. Oh how I put a damper on things! :-)

Actually that isn't that unusual in my breed or at least payment is often defered until a litter is born, but then we normally know each other well, as it is a numerically small breed, with dedicated breeders.
thats the same in my breed aswell Brainless
I have been quite happy to do this in the past as well.

Not unusual in my breed either, but mainly between those of us who know each other well as most of us don't have a spare £850-£1.000 in our pockets.

I recently had an email from a man saying, as he'd seen I'd got bitches, I can have first refusal on using his dog, who was 9 years of age, but had never been used before, and as I was 'local', he'd give me a deal on a stud fee! He also added, that he wanted his dog to sire a litter as he wanted him to pass on his lovely temperament before he was too old!
So after contemplating whether to reply or not, I did and asked what health tests the dog has, and what his pedigree was, and if he had provisions to help home a litter, if they had trouble selling them. And then added that I would not wish to use his dog, and passing on his good temperament for a fee, was not a good enough reason to warrant using him at stud. Not suprisingly I didnt get a reply lol. :)
i have also waited for payment but not when bitch has had pups but when scan shown she was in pup.

Which I can understand. But the stud fee is very different to toy breeds where £200 is the norm.
And knowing someone has a great bearing on these decisions. I was approached by someone who wanted to use one of my boys, and I really liked her bitch. Instead of charging a stud fee, I asked if she would accept the fee as a deposit on a puppy. And I paid the (big) difference when I collected my pup.
But this is not quite the same thing as getting a phone call from someone that wants to "come straight over" as they want their pet mated.
jean alot of people think us that own dogs just want to make money LOL and will let our boys sire any litter :-( , these people are out to make money and do no health tests on ther girls sadly x

I don't expect most reputable breeders would consider such people anyway and would only allow use of their dogs on bitches of people known to them.
After all you want to be sure that the pups will be reared as you would hope and their aims were like your own.
You have to be very sure of the people using your stud as you will have little or no input to where his puppies will end up. When you won the mother you decide where the pups will go.

Yes, I agree. I can't believe how many folk are surprised that you say no. They think that you will want to just grab the stud fee.
But hey ho, I don't suppose we will change that. I'm well aware of the fact that the people I say no to will find someone else quite easily.

so very true!!!!! :(
True.
I have said no on many an occasion and always found out later the bitch did have a litter from someones elses dog.
