Topic Dog Boards / Breeding / Accredited breeder scheme

Hypothetical question needing an answer please.

If you are an accredited breeder, and all your breeding stock is hipscored (as per the reccomendation of the breed), does a bitch that comes to you to USE your stud dog (but is not your dog) need to be hipscored too - is this a requirement of the scheme?

Or is it just your OWN breeding stock?

Thanks

I believe it is just your own stock, my dogs co-owner is an accredited breeder and ive had a bitch come to him who was not hipscored (not something I would usually agree with but this bitch was 6.5 years old so made an exception as hipscoring in our breed has only been catching on with most folk over the past few years.)

Edit to add ... had it been a younger bitch I would have encouraged the owner to hipscore, probably refused use of my dog if not.  You just have to think the pups will have your dogs name on them, and if anything goes wrong people will look at the sire and the dam.

If you read the guidelines it would appear to be ok but personally I wouldn't do it.  My breed require eyes and hips but only recommend elbows.  If I get any enquiries for my boy I insist on all these being done - depends how seriously you take the ABS I suppose.

I'm not in a breed that requires testing, but if I was, I would not be breeding to any dog or bitch that didn't have the required testing.  And while not the 'letter' of the law, as a buyer I would expect that if I were potentially purchasing the progeny of an accredited breeder, that both dogs involved in creating the litter would have all the relevant health tests even if only one of them belonged to an ABS member.

I hope that made sense.

Why wouldn't you request a 6 year old to have been hipscored?  I did two of my girls at the age of 6 (once our breed decided to start hipscoring) they both came back with hipscores of a total of 10.

Not having a go, just wondering why.

Someone I know had an accidental mating with their own dogs and didn't know about the injections.  As soon as she got confirmation bitch was in whelp, she had both of their eyes tested and the sire hip/elbow scored.  He was 7.5 years old  and hips 7:5 and elbows 1 - very acceptable.  She is not an Accredited Breeder so she could have just ignored testing but she did take advice given.
