Me and my faithful are looking to travel across route 66 for a few months then return to europe. i've heard you have to have the animal revaccinated in the us, and retested, taking 7 months, as the uk rabies shot is not seen as suitable? the best i've been able to find is that theirs is a live vaccine, and the uk one dead. can i get her done with the live vaccine in the uk and get it stamped in her passport? or is it all rubbish and their cats was expiring or something? Samantha has a uk pets passport. I can only get a 90 day visa for the USA.

I think you have been given half understood info by someone.  The US does not have anything like our Pet passport scheme, you need your UK one to get back into the UK.  There are often problems with getting dogs pet passported in the US to bring them over here as it can be hard to make some breeders and vets understand that each step has to be followed in exactly the right order - the big stumbling block is often that the microchip is inserted after the rabies shot has been given, which is a big no no!  As long as you dog's passport is all in order, and the booster is not due before you get back, all you need is the tick and worm treatment  as you are leaving the USA to come home.  Teh DEFRA site has all the details you need.

Remember when checking out flights to return (if you not going with a fixed return date) that dogs are not accepted by lots of airlines in very high or very low temperatures, and that while with various USA airlines you can take dogs as excess baggage with BA (and I think Virgin) they have to go as cargo - lot more expensive.

All that is required to get your dog into the USA is up to date Rabies and most airlines require a fit to fly certification (can be noted in the pet passport).

If you go with American Airlines you can do the multi city option which works out cheaper than two singles if departure and return flights to different places (you can only fly BACK to UK as Cargo, so much better to return to the continent and drive/arrange a lift back).

Regards temperatures, you can't fly if any of the ground temperatures on stop offs is above 85'F or below I think 45'F (7.7'C).  You can fly down to 20'F (-7ish) if you get an 'Acclimation Certificate' from your vet that has to have specific data on it.

I would whenever possible opt for a direct flight.
