My boy has sired 10 litters and has always tied. However with the girl he is mating at the moment he has had one slip mating. They are due back today for their second mating and I think the owners are under the impression that the slip mating was a complete failure. I am wondering if it happens again today what would your thoughts and actions be on 2 slip matings. I used to accept payment for the stud fee on confirmation of pregnancy but after 3 hard fought battles to get the moneys owed I now take it on on matings. I have told the girls owners to google Slip matings and read up about it but whether they will or not I don't know.
It would depend on how "active" the slip mating was seen to be on the part of the dog. If it was though the dog had ejeculated into the bitch then I would charge the stud fee with an agreement of a refund if there were no puppies. If the dog meerly made a weak effort and very brief entry into the bitch, with no sign of thrusting, I would not charge. However I think if the dog has penetrated the bitch at all you might still be justified in charging.

If you hold her, You could just hold him on at the back long enough for the fluid to complete the mating after the sperm. For aprox 5mins. If it is her right day I would expect her to concieve. You should be able to judge yourself. Then payment could be made.
He ia such an easy stud dog and knows his job so after he had thrusted he stayed in place as usual and waited for me to lift his leg and turn him but the girl took a step forward and although he was fully extended and swollen he just slid out.

I've had a few slip matings over the years and have never been charged unless pups were born and I wouldn't be happy to pay.
If I've got the day right then it's up to the stud dog handler to hold them together until the bitch has tied. But I have always known the stud dog owners and so there was never any thought that I wouldn't pay. :)

I would just stand at the back and hold him there for a while, She may just not tie.
"He ia such an easy stud dog and knows his job so after he had thrusted he stayed in place as usual and waited for me to lift his leg and turn him ............."
In that case he has done his job. The bitch is probably a little larger than the norm so his tie was not so effectual. I would suggest if he mates her again today to just hold him on the bitch for a while, then let one foreleg slide over the bitch so he is standing side by side but do not turn him.
I have had my biggest litters from slip matings. My young dog has just had his first litter (8) and that was from 2 very quick slip matings. The bitches owners werent happy but I knew he had done his job. I was taking pick of litter anyway but would of probably took stud fee once pregnancy was confirmed.
I never turn my dogs but just do what dogsbody said.
I never used to turn my previous stud but a bitch who had returned for her 3rd litter from him and had always been an angel snapped badly at him before we could react even though she was being held by her collar and he ended up with a cracking scar a broken tooth. My boy seems happier back to back which I am thankful for as it seems to give them both chance to relax after their exertion. I will see what happens tonight and hold him in place. The girl is a stunning example (the likes I haven't seen for a long time) and would love POL but I have just had my first baby so having a puppy is totally out of the question for me right now. Isn't it always the way!!!!

If you're not happy taking payment for a slip mating why not keep hold of the registration form until pups appear?

Thats an excellent idea :-)

That used to be what happen in our breed payment was taken and the form 1 signed after pups were born and payment made, but now with on-line registrations there isn't that safeguard re payment.
I would like to think that once you had agreed to allow your dog to be used you know and trust the bitch owner enough to get paid.

but you can withhold KC reg or stud book no. until payment is made..
I do agree about trust.. to be honest, would anyone allow their dog to be used by someone you did not consider trustworthy?
Many stud owners in our breed never take payment up front..when pregnancy is confirmed, then payment is made..

It is easy enough to find stud book numbers and reg numbers.
I am proud of the stud book numbers (only give to CC, RCC and 1st and 2nd in Open and JW winners in my breed) so they are included in my pedigrees.
I have never seen a KC pedigree up close but would think reg numbers are included?

I never charge for a slip mating - not ever.
I ask people to let me know if their bitch is pregnant. If they want to be dishonest, and say that no litter materialised, that's up to them. They would be unable to register the litter anway. As I would let them have the KC regsitration papers after the stud fee had been payed.
I assume that, without my signature, they could try to register online. But I would be contacted by the Kennel Club to confirm - and would say no.
I mated my bitch early last year, i paid the stud at the time, it was a slip mating and no puppies. Return offered, i took it and had about 5 slip matings and she was caught.

my boy on his first attempt only had 2 slip matings but held in position etc the bitch caught and she produced 12 healthy pups. This is a large breed though.

one of my boys is difficult to get tied, he's two matings with ties produced 9 and 7 puppies....different bitches
his matings that were only slips both resulted in both bitches having 2 puppies.....two different bitches again

I may be being really daft here - but Im not sure if we had slip matings or not.
My bitch was very amicable, very flirty and kept still every time the male got on her, several times he'd try to get in place but could not hit target. On a few occasions it looked like he was in,his body language would change and he'd curve more and thrust faster but then slip off again with a tiny bit of clear liquid on the end -is this a slip?
> is this a slip?
possibly, see your other post for a fuller descroption.

we had conflicting advice on her being ready - vaginal swab and vaginoscopy said Sunday she was ready ( he was less interested but we got a 50 min tie ) yet bloods said she ovulated Tuesday - so we went Wednesday - no tie, maximum 30 seconds of thrusting - so possible slip
More interested today, again possible slip, but he was tired after an hour and went to sleep despite my bitch standing over him suggestively!
All her 'bits' are a lot less swollen today and yesterday despite it bing apparantly 'her time'.
I always thought we'd se more liquid from a slip mating so presumed thesecould not be classed as a slip mating - but might explain why he was so tired afterwards.
App he usually mounts no problem, but is used to aggressive bitches - perhaps he dosent like easy women!

Can i ask how much you have paid out so far for the swabs, vaginal inspection and pre mate tests

That is how it should be her vulva should become less turgid and the area aeound it soften making mating more comfortable.
I'd definitely be wanting the stud dogs services on Saturday morning.

Piratebear, please could you continue this on your existing thread - we don't want to take this thread too much off on a tangent and it would be better to keep advice on your bitch being ready or not on your own thread
Thanks
Oh I had forgotten about this thread. There were 9 pups.
