Topic Dog Boards / Health / Jelly Poo !!!
- By vikc32 [gb] Date 06.10.10 09:44 UTC
Hi , I'm hoping you can help me ... again !!!
I have a 9 week old pup who I have had just a week . She came to me on adult fish4dogs which I was told would be fine as long as I soaked it . I wasn't sure so I tried to wean her over onto the Royal Canin Mini Pup/junior I use myself . Anyway , her poo started sloppy and over the course of a few days got runnier , sometimes even white jelly !! I took her to the vets yesterday , who wormed her , gave her an anti biotic injection , and sent her away with a 5 day course of AB's and some Hill's tinned sensitive stomach food . I was told to give her very small amounts fairly frequently , and as long as she wasn't being sick and eating and drinking it would sort itself out over the next few days . Anyway , I have followed all said instructions , and this morning she had a solid poo , but she has just done a big blob of white jelly again , do you think this is just it working it's way through , or cause for concern ? How long would you wait before you went back to the vets ? She is quite bright in herself , drinking plenty and keen to eat when I give it her .... thanks :-)

Hi, it sounds like all the change in food has upset her tum. The jelly/mucus is her bodies way of protecting the linings of her intestines. Just feed her a good quality puppy food, preferably one with lamb and rice (no wheat gluten in it) small meals little and often and she should settle down over the next few days.
If you are at all unhappy have a chat with your vet,but bear in mind some AB's can also upset their tums.

Kind Regards

I agree the change of food has probably done it. Antibiotics whilst doing good also upset the natural juices in the gut. I would add a dollop of natural yoghurt on to the breakfast, my dogs have this as part of their natural diet.
Hope things improve soon.

Hi vikc32

unfortunately many new owners feel the need to move away from the breeders' advice on feeding almost as soon as they bring their new puppy home and this is the result.  Even keeping to the same diet, a change of water and also the upset of leaving dam and siblings can cause pups to go off their food and have upset tums.

Since your vet has added worming and ABs to the mix of an overactive GI system it's not surprising the problem is still apparent.  I'd skip two meals and then feed two very small meals later today of the bland food the vet gave you and then tomorrow move onto four small meals etc.

Personally I wouldn't advocate adding any supplement of any type to the puppy's diet right now - it will just be something else for her to react to.

Providing she is drinking sufficiently and keeps bright as you've described then hopefully she shouldn't need a return to the vet but keep a very close eye on her as youngsters can go downhill very quickly, particularly through dehydration.

When you do begin to introduce food other than Hills tinned to her make it something bland and stodgy like overcooked rice and add some steamed white fish to it.  Gradually over a few days reintroduce your chosen kibble in small quantities to allow her insides to cope with it on a gentle basis.

HTH, good luck Teri

Hi , thankyou all ,
I was going to put her on James Wellbeloved Lamb and Rice Puppy when all this was sorted , so hope that will be ok . Have spoken to her breeder who has said that they were on the puppy variety of Fish4Dogs before I collected her , but she hadn't got enough to give me some , so gave me some of the adult , which means she has had a lot of change as I was giving her this and then starting mixing in my own . As I speak she is up and playing and I haven't had a jelly poo since earlier this morning , so I am hoping if I go very slowly now , she will be ok , although will be keeping a close eye on her anyway ( not difficult as her chosen place to sleep is basically on my face !!! )

Yes thats a good quality food so she should be ok on it,it's gluten free and lamb is a well tolerated meat for sensitive tums.

Your breeder really has no excuse for not providing you with the correct food,I always send my puppies off with enough food to last a month. You know how many puppies you have and I love getting the puppy packs made up ready.

Hopefully your pup will settle down now and you already know to take it steady with her. Puppies really cant take sudden food changes or has been mentioned even a change of water supply. I've always sent my pups off with a large bottle of water as well. My poor owners have been laden down before they even left my house! lol

Kind Regards

Agree with roscoebabe - the breeder should never have given you an adult feed.  And if she is a member of the Fish4Dogs breeder club, she would have been given a free puppy pack for all the pups in the litter - 1.5kg bag of puppy food, a sachet of salmon mousse, and a little bag of sea jerky.  Oh yes!  AND a 15kg FREE bag of puppy food for herself!!!!

Roscoebabe. Members of the forum still surprise me with their decency.  I know it is some years ago (5) but we came home with less then one day of feed, and that was it.

Poor little pup with bad tummy. have you considered giving fish 4 dogs anyway. It is a good food and price wise about the same as other good ones. If that was what the pup was on originally I presume with no problems it could be easiest for pup to go back

The food is only a small part of my puppy packs lol. I provide the correct brush and comb, stainless feeding dishes, collar and lead suitable till pup is about 5/6 months old, puppy treats,toys..sqeaky and raggers,a soft toy for them to curl up with, ball on a rope, dried puppy milk..enough to make up 2pints,large bottle of water to mix with their own water supply for a few days and a bottle of cleaner thats safe to use in case of accidents. It takes three of us to carry everything out to the cars lol. I give them a roll of kitchen paper and a few plastic bags for the trip home as well.
My sons think I'm mad but I just want to make sure my babies have everything they need for the first few weeks.

Kind Regards
