A friend is looking for a Frenchie, and there are some advertised locally, what health tests should the sire/dam have had done? She wants a healthy pet, not to show/breed.
There are no KC required tests, however if you go onto the French Bulldog Club of England web site then you will see a list of recomended tests that are now done on Frenchies. The main one being a DNA test for Hereditary Cataracts.
hi there ,ive noticed some breeders of note having their frenchies spines x-rayed and mentioning their dogs are clear,so maybe there is an incidence of spine problems and although not a recognised health test yet, maybe they are being progressive by doing so now?
Hi Roynrumble most good pug, frenchie and bulldog breeders will xray for hemivertebrae as Brainless says. With pugs it will also rule out scholiosis of the spine. I think the UK Pug Club were collecting results for xrays of hemivertebra screened dogs, but not sure if they still are. However, two clear parents can still produce pups with the condition.
jeangenie,i am well aware that they do xray spines to show up hv,sadly two clear parents dont equal a clear pup,i was refering to all the other info they had on health problems,i think its a good thing that they know the poss problems and highlight them, rather than the usual,oh they are fine, which is the response we get from the pug club jo
Do they test them for their knee's? Cause I no with Boston's slipping knee happens in the breed and juvinile cateracts- they need tests for that so wouldn't frenchies be the same?
