Topic Dog Boards / General / Gate warning sign?
- By LucyDogs [gb] Date 01.10.10 15:49 UTC
I'm having trouble finding a sign which says 'Please Shut Gate - Dogs Roaming Loose'. They either seem to say one or the either, but not both. I don't need an expensive one either, just something rainproof we can stick on the 2 side gates. Any ideas please? :-)

Best to make one yourself. :-)

If you have a 'Johnsons the cleaners' on a high street near you they would make one for you.

I live in a small village, no Johnsons anywhere near us. No idea how to make my own except again online, and I thought that would be more expensive than a ready made - it doesn't seem that unusual a message, we just want to say what we want people to do and why. Oh well, thanks anyway.

Get an offcut of timber the right size, paint it to make it waterproof then paint on your wording. Easy peasy. :-)

To be honest Lucy any where the dogs are likely to be loose would be padlocked, can't rely on people to shut gates.

You're assigning me a much greater skill in crafting objects than I possess JG! And I would prefer the gate padlocked myself Brainless, but hubby likes the window cleaner, and we can't demand he only turns up if we are home. The gate is bolted, but can be opened by a tall person reaching over - not someone I would have ever entertained in London, but ok in out little private road off the cul de sac at the edge of the tiny village. :-)

What about borrowing a laminating machine most work places have them just make one on the computer print it off then laminate and cut it to size. Some stalls at champ shows might do it.

Are these any good     http://www.netpetshop.co.uk/nsearch.aspx?keywords=gate+signs

Thanks Rotties, but those only say one or the other. I was on the verge of buying both and putting them next to each other when hubby took over and has apparently found something. Thanks all! :-)

Lucy, I am also challenged in the diy area and got one from ebay.  I can't remember who from but this is similar, pick your own text and it is sent through to you.

Wouldn't just a 'Please Shut The Gate' be enough ?. That's all you are asking people to do. Not sure I'd want to advertise the fact that my dog was free to be taken from my garden through an unlocked gate. Better still, get a spring system put on your gate so it closes on it own.

Hubby wants to say why we want the gate shut, of course you do get thieves everywhere but hopefully in our little village it's more that we want to explain why we want the gate shut and not have tradesmen think we're just fussy. Thanks Cheekychow I'll have a look at that one! I like the idea of the spring system too!

I'd definitely go for padlocks, you cannot rely on people to close gates whether you have a sign or not.  Today, we have the decorators painting our kitchen and I have the dogs in the office with me to make sure they are safe.  I made a point of asking the decorator twice to close the front door after him, not only on the latch as the dogs can run out - he agreed and then left the door open every time he went outside.

People who are not dog people do not realise how quickly dogs can escape!

We also have window cleaner and I prefer the windows on the back to be left uncleaned if I'm not at home.

And on one occasion last year there was a young red setter (6 months old) running around on the road outside, I caught her, phoned her owners and she had escaped because a delivery man had 'left the gate open' :(
