Any advise please. My bitch is due her season anytime (last season Feb17th) her booster is due this month, should I leave it until she has been mated and pups older before she has this vaccine? As soon as she is in season she will be having her canine herpes vaccine, can she be wormed as well? She has a good hip score of 5/4 and a clear eye cert so has the stud boy, would it be wrong of me to ask the stud owner to get her boy to have the canine herpes vaccine or would she be offended???

I can't comment on CHV as I've never used it.  But I have had girls boostered on day 2 of a season (prior to mating) with no ill effects.

I would go ahead with the booster jab personally.  As for worming, you can Drontal her now with no ill effects, but to be honest, I wait until they're pregnant and dose from day 40 with Panacur suspension (the only licensed wormer for pregnant bitches.)  Using Panacur I have never seen worms in either mum or pups.

I would have her vaccinated if it's due before she's actually in season.  If I intend to have a litter from my girls, I worm with Drontal as soon as they come into season.

CHV - I give it at time of mating or just after, not when season starts.  I've never heard of it being given to the stud - just bitches.  Be interested to hear what other breeders, especially stud dog owners have to say on this matter.

It seems that in the past vets recommended boostering before mating, but now if a booster is due the advise tends to be to put it off as the pups can end up not taking up their own vaccination well.

Hi we have used CHV its is Eurican herpes 205 as are bitch kept have problems ! so we used the canine Ovulation test pads then when we tested are bitch for when she is ready approx right time for stud dog ! then we took her for 1st injection EH 205 BETWEEN 7 -10 then 2nd injection 1 to 2 weeks before date of whelping.
she is 4yrs old her 1st litter & her last, last night approx midnight until 930am today she had 6 pups 3 at moment are ok but 3 were born cleft palates in which we took are bitch and all the pups to vets which vet took care of 3 pups cleft palates! i think to myself when i look at my bitch & her family was it all worth it she is very good mum! but what i put her through i know i should feel happy but its saddness that is greater feeling i feel at the moment! lesson i learnt is that if bitch cant do what should come  natraully should we intervin! sorry about any spellings!!

Eddieluck, are you saying there is a link between cleft pallet and the CHV vaccine?

My heart goes out to you...it's so difficult (never mind heart-breaking) to understand what goes wrong.... when we think we are doing everything possible for our dogs to lead healthy lives..

I fervently believe that the damage being done to the immune systems of our animals by the relentless onslaught of yearly vaccines, new vaccines (where the data just doesn't exist yet to prove safety or efficiency) chemical wormers, chemical flea control, grooming products, commercial diets etc (and even the chemicals in our washing powders, detergents, weed killers etc) are contributing to weaker and weaker new generations of puppies and kittens

And I believe that this terribly sad cycle will continue unabated unless we can open our eyes to the truth of what is happening....

Genetic defects
Dr Larry Glickman at Purdue University has found that routinely vaccinated dogs develop auto-antibodies to a wide range of their own biochemicals, including DNA. The significance of this study is immense. It means that vaccines cause genetic defects.

I understand your sadness.  So very, very sorry to hear the news.  I do hope that your girl goes on to do her babes proud, and that watching her rear them will help you.
