Ok, had a litter in the summer, pups all micro-chipped here at my house by qualified micro-chip friend.  Pup goes to new home, their vet scans pup and can't find said chip.  He had his first vaccination and was told they would recheck him when he went back for second.  They went back yesterday and no sign of chip.  I witnessed him being chipped and my friend scanned him afterwards to show me the number etc.

Now my question is, if the chip is dead/missing, can his new owner just have him re-chipped and write to Petlog to tell them about the first one.  The new owners vet want to give him a GA and x-ray him......costing £150, which they are not too happy about, which I totally understand. He is only 13 weeks old!!  I have offered to pay for the new chip.

My bet is the chip fell out soon after it was inserted. The hole is rather large and sometimes stays open too long (especially if the animal manages to scratch at it, or a littermate does) and I've had this happen quite a few times with cats and kittens although not yet with dogs. Hence when I chip mine I check the chip daily for the next few days as you don't always find the chip laying about. (But I have found chips on the floor a few times so know for certain they can fall out.) I'd say this is a far more likely scenario than the chip having moved really far inside the body.

I'd contact PetLog and tell the story and explain there is a new number. I certainly wouldn't x-ray. :)

I always massage dogs I chip for a few mins afterwards to try and make sure the chip stays in place.  My guess to would be that its come out, if it wasn't inserted far enough.

They can migrate when they've been in the body a while  but this seems far fetched in this case to have moved already.

Chips migrating or disappearing is quite common but seldom pointed out by the vet...

There is a lot to be said for chips plus tattoos.

No much help though if you are trying to bring your dog back into the UK after a holiday.

I was surprised by a recent press report that said around 100 dogs attempting to come into the Country annually on the Pet Passport have lost their microchip. I have no idea what percentage of dogs microchipped that is but it would indicate that a lot of microchips go missing if the overall percentage was known.

I have known a cat that was microchipped and within an hour or so, the chip was found in the coat of the cat. So either it wasn't inserted properly or it had fell out..

whenever any of my dogs go to the vets for whatever, I always get their chips read. I have a horror of turning up at a port and the chip not being found.

my 2 dal puppies both were micro chipped before 5 weeks (for hearing tests) and I recently noticed that they have both moved, 1 is in her chest and other 1 is in the front of her shoulder.  Luckily we noticed and vet scanned the front to check. I've told their breeder to inform all other pup owners.
