Topic Dog Boards / General / Pooper Scooper Gadget for Older People?

I wonder if anyone has come across a gadget for scooping the poop that would overcome 'bending double' or crouching down to do so? My ageing father has started to have some back problems that more or less make it impossible for him to bend/crouch. He would still be able to bend down but it is debatable if he would ever get upright again! Obviously, his dog goes in the garden before going out but he is concerned about the odd accident that is bound to occur at some point. He has asked me if there is anything available on the market which would help him overcome this problem. I am sure he is not alone so does anyone have any suggestions or has anyone come across a tool that would help?

There's this ... ... but I'd imagine the poo could get very squished!

I just googled Long Handled Poop Scoop and got these:

http://www.qualitypetproducts4u.com/ProductDetail_ROS12630_Company%20of%20Animals%20Arms%20Length%20Long%20Handled%20Dog%20Poop%20Scoop.html&wsid=062548110111074152711509201013&sitesource=Google

Most of the results were variations on this.  I'm not sure he'd want to walk with these.

I'm sure I remember seeing something a little less cumbersome that was spring loaded, but I didn't see any in my quick search (could be something I saw in the States though)

I use a tool designed to pick up horse dung it is a long handled deep 'dust' pan and a long handled scraper, had it for many years and it works well.

I[;ve been looking for a few months.  You can't really carry most of them around if you are walking your dog and the person is unsteady and already has a walking stick etc.  Have been thinking about trying to design something but would take ages to get it designed etc!

That is true I only use mine in my own yard other wise it is a plastic bag job - suppose one could design something that would attach to a walking stick but I have not seen one ready available.

Thank you for your replies and suggestions. I think the walking stick idea was the best under the circumstances. However, I can see that it could get very messy! There is obviously a gap in the market here, so if anyone fancies inventing a sturdy walking stick that could scoop with no mess - then I am sure the demand would be there.

Top 1 here may do it, PAH do a similiar 1 with a longer handle.

Admin I have thought about it, but I wouldn't even know where to go to to even start it and sadly don't have the money.  Really need one for my dad as he wants to take their dog out but he can't as he's unable to bend.

Sadly Anworth you couldn't really go to the shops with that long handled one.  I've looked everywhere and can't find anything suitable.

Do you think I should get in touch with the Dragon's with my idea?
