I'm currently just finalising our Parish Plan and have come across an interesting debate: that of over hyphenation and/or word splitting!

We've reviewed Greenprint (like blueprint, one word), fly-tipping (seems better with a hyphen), house building (not sure why that had previously been written as one word), saltmarsh (a geographical term and one word), post-war (most agree it needs a hyphen), BUT

I'm struggling with noticeboard / notice board.  The dictionary suggests one word, product companies have it written as 2 words and I'm really not sure which way to go

Can anyone give me a 'quotable' definitive answer please?  (UK spelling) :)

Sorry no, spelling is not a strong point for me and I always think that language is for communication and if you understand what is being said or written then that should be the only requirement. There bet that will prove controversial. :-)

Noticeboard is one word, no hyphen

Just a thought are the dictionaries English or American?

Quite often when something is named as a product name , ie had some sort of copyright you see it differently laid out.    Not sure if Noticeboard was one of these.

Noticeboard as one word would be my choice :-)

I thought the hyphen had been removed from the english language altogether by them that decide these things !!
Not sure it is taught in schools any more but will check with my english teacher friend.

We still teach the use of a  hyphen at our school :-)

Good on you Harley  I shall have to check in my school too. I am a bit old fashioned where language is concerned I like it as i was taught.
One student has just told me I am posh because I speak without a south london accent lol
