I was bought up in a time when tattos were for old sailors and lady of somewhat dubious behaviour !

However now at 50+ seeing my daughter and friends with their quite pretty tats I am wondering about just a little one maybe on my foot ?
Daughter in law just had a lovely set of butterflies done today flying up her back on a vine and has set me thinking again

What do others think ? Am I mad ? or is it the female equivalent of the fast car/bike for men lol
- By Linz13 [gb] Date 13.09.10 14:26 UTC
Go for it!

I'm 29, got my first tattoo in April. 3 stars across the top of my foot, each one different and each one represents something special to me.
- By cornishmals [gb] Date 13.09.10 14:27 UTC
I had my first in my 20s,and vowed never to have another, but had a Tattoo of an Alaskan Malamute on my shoulder and I am in my 40s
My daughter had on on her foot and ankle and this was a really painful area, but it was a large tattoo.
Go for it,but find a good Tattoo artist.

> What do others think ? Am I mad ?

Yup.. Thats just me though.. There are some lovely tattoo's about on women..My issue with them is that when I go on holiday and you are by the pool or on the beach(if you like trips like this) and then you see an older woman with what would of been a great tattoo(or not) in deeply wrinkled skin, not a pretty sight if in an obvious place. As we get older we do tend to cover up that bit more so not a problem in certain places. Anything with colour is not a good look either and they do fade and will need in time to be touched up too..

I see people and know people who have a tattoo on their arms/backs and when they wear a lovely thin strapped evening dress it personally ruins the whole sophisticated look..

There are people on here who have them, like/love them, but not for me..sorry
- By furriefriends Date 13.09.10 14:56 UTC
I like the bluntness of your reply Sue mad ? yes lol
Wouldnt go for colour and yes I agree sue about wrinkled skin, dresses etc. was thinking about on my foot or thereabouts. I could choose then when I show it and at least my feet are kinda still looking ok and hopefully would be the last to go yuk and by then who would care lol

Still thinking. I have three piercing in one ear and 2 in the other but they are small and discrete because i am not one for showy things usually and prefer looking classy ( well I do try)
So this will be a big one if I go for it and am not rushing
- By Lacy Date 13.09.10 15:09 UTC
I'm with suejaw, for the short term they can look good on a 'firm' background but when things tend to head south they loose structure. So would say not for me. How about a transfer?
- By Annie Goz [gb] Date 13.09.10 15:54 UTC
Oh I'm with the looks good on a firm background .....it's the ageing body bit that looks awful my B/I has loads and when we were younger they did look good but now in his 60s ....well no can't say they do him any favours

.............forget about looking 'classy' if you opt for a tattoo with five piercings!! :) :)
- By furriefriends Date 13.09.10 16:05 UTC
Cheers I am not sure that 3 little pearl studs in one ear and 2 in the other exactly makes me a chav !!

> Cheers I am not sure that 3 little pearl studs in one ear and 2 in the other exactly makes me a chav !!

No, of course it doesn't! :) I just saw the funny side of your post, furriefriends! :) Sorry!!
- By furriefriends Date 13.09.10 16:11 UTC
Thanks for that I really did think you were serious !

still friends eh ? lol

This is something that I've considered and admire the artwork that the tattooists produce on the telly. I would say go for something small and tasteful. Two people in my breed (that I know of) have an image of their dog's head tattooed on them, one is on the calf and the other one is on the back/shoulder. IMHO they don't look great or very lifelike and who knows in 10 years time when their bodies head south they might look like a completely different breed!
- By Lacy Date 13.09.10 16:26 UTC

> IMHO they don't look great or very lifelike and who knows in 10 years time when their bodies head south they might look like a completely different breed!

LOL! With things on the move south, what the .... would a BH tattoo look like in 10/15 years time!
- By Oldilocks [ir] Date 13.09.10 18:01 UTC
The best thing to do is to wait for everything to finish 'dropping', then have the tattoos!! :) :) Hee-hee, imagine loads of tattooed 70 year olds walking around!!!! :) :)
- By Sarah Date 13.09.10 18:14 UTC
I have a foot tattoo and I love it, it can be covered up easily with shoes etc or be on show, my choice. I can't believe my foot will sag too much lol.

HOWEVER! it is an incredibly painful place to have a tattoo - how good is your pain thresh-hold?
- By furriefriends Date 13.09.10 20:41 UTC
Not bad usually (she says shivering in her boots !). Yes perhaps waiting till the rests gone south is a good idea. That was one reason I thought my foot might be a good idea it shouldnt be a problem in those slinky off the shoulder numbers or at least if I were to wear a dress I think a tattoo would be the least of my problems.

Maybe I should have one as a retirement present I will probably 70 by then !
- By Lacy Date 13.09.10 20:50 UTC
Going off topic, it's the lip, tongue and cheek piercings that worry me. I have this mental picture of people in later years sipping their drinks and it dripping out like a watering can!

- By Alfieshmalfie Date 13.09.10 21:58 UTC
Im not really a tattoo person myself, but dont mind seeing them on other people. However what I want to know is those people that have those tunnels in their ears and stretch a big hole, whats going to happen when they want to take them out?
- By Dukedog Date 13.09.10 22:07 UTC
I just love this forum it beats watching the Carry On films hands down. :)

I don't know where it's coming from, but I'm just looking out for the worst possible innuendo from everyones replies, and it's all in my head I'm sure but it's making me chuckle anywhoo :) :)
- By jacksgirl [gb] Date 13.09.10 22:14 UTC
My ex - hubby was covered in tats so I don't have a problem with them......on other people. However, one thing to bear in mind, he used to love sunbathing except some of the dyes in the tats used to react badly to a lot of sunlight. They would swell up and were painful to the touch. Never forget a tat is for life, not just for Christmas :-)
- By Dukedog Date 13.09.10 22:17 UTC
There you go.....thank goodness it's not just in my head lol
- By WolfieStruppi [gb] Date 13.09.10 22:30 UTC
Yes belly button piercings on heavily pregnant girls - not a good look but a frequent sight in a town near me which I've renamed Chav-ly.
- By bilbobaggins [gb] Date 13.09.10 22:49 UTC
A spiders web on the inside of my thigh ;-)

Not really but I joke about it quite often .....when I feel the need to make a point!!
- By J.Hardcastle [gb] Date 14.09.10 03:19 UTC
A man my OH works with had those tunnels in his ears... they were really huge too. He recently decided he didn't like them and went and had then sewn up at the hospital. Pain to make them, pain to make them go away... Fun.

Had to laugh at the cobweb tattoo. I can bet that can get you some looks.
- By Dukedog Date 14.09.10 06:26 UTC

Like the qoute from Smantha in Sex in the City - "jees honey wax much?" " she's happily married but she's not growing a national forest." Priceless... :)

Love the comments yes sian it beats tv hands down lol
Ratty footprints how sweet
Maybe I should just get the other dog I want they ARE for life and I know I wouldnt regret that
As we have moved to piercings my just 18 daughter came home from "shopping" wink wink with 2 tiny diamonds implants on her wrist about 1/4 inch a part. They look pretty when they ctch the light but practical I dont think so and painful YES ! Mind at least she has gone off the tongue piercing thing at last.
- By Lois_vp [gb] Date 14.09.10 10:55 UTC
I really don't like tattoos...in fact I absolutely loathe them.
- By dollface Date 14.09.10 12:18 UTC
I have 3 frogs on my back- 2 poison darts and a red eye tree frog- just love them- want to get my whole back done with a huge orchid in the middle and some more frogs...

I also have a memorial one for my niece on my leg- its a mouse taking a bite out of a blue rose which make a heart, also has the year and her name- I love it- the guy who designed it did a fab job. The mouse is because everyone called her mouse and she loved blue roses, the writing is in lime green cause if she was a crayon she would be Lime Green :-)

The same guy did all my tats and can't wait to get my back done- I also want one on my side not exatcly to sure what am thinking a gargoyle...

Just make sure they have a aclave (sp) to make sure everything is steralized ect

Hi furriefriends

Ignore my last post it's been a long day......
- By Norman [gb] Date 14.09.10 17:36 UTC
Go for it I had mine done at 17 and am seriously thinking (many years later ) of getting a little dainty one on the inside of my wrist - made the mistake of having mine done my bum so I never see it !!
- By Blue Date 14.09.10 18:38 UTC
I have a tiny devil on my back that I super regret and I don't like them at all on woman. Just my opinion though :-)
- By katie- DDB [gb] Date 14.09.10 19:17 UTC
I think a tattoo can look totally hidious or totally gorgeous, depends what and where. Sod how old you are, you only live once, and who's to say you'll even get to be old and wrinkly, live for the day!!

I have 5 butterflies flying from the top of my arm, across my back to the top of the other arm, in bold colour and I love them!

The artist who drew them did them from hand so I know that they are all individual.

I am 27 now and had my first one at 18. My mum loved mine so much she went and got a little butterfly too.

It's a personal choice and not one to be taken lightly, only do it if you are certain and dont avoid having it done where you want it coz you think it'll hurt, it hurts regardless of where it is so if ya gonna do it have it exactly where you want it. x x

It wasn't your posting at fault, but me, being over-tired today, so I don't properly take-in everything I read. I had read these postings you were refering to but they hadn't sunk in my memory bank overload. Serves me right for staying up all hours on here, instead of getting to bed and having my full 8 hours beauty sleep. :)

My hubbie is having a tattoo done tomorrow, quite a big one on his arm. He is 52 never had one before. ( still can't believe he is doing it)

It is a memorial type tattoo for his sister than was tragically taken from him recently.. If I can get a photo I will load it someone for those who love tattoos to see :-)
- By dollface Date 15.09.10 00:20 UTC
Sounds nice :-)

There was a woman on This Morning on Monday that used the ashes of her dead son to mix in with the tattoo ink for a memorial tattoo on her back. Very bizarre !

I don't like tattoos at all I am afraid not even for a memorial for a lost one. Most of the ones I have seen are very tacky and agree that on a woman with a strappy top can look very cheap and take away any elegance they may have.

The body is beautiful enough without putting graffiti on it !
- By Jeangenie [gb] Date 15.09.10 06:51 UTC

>Most of the ones I have seen are very tacky and agree that on a woman with a strappy top can look very cheap and take away any elegance they may have.

Exactly; they look cheap on young, smooth skin and look really vile on wrinkles! No style, elegance or class.

My son's had a very small one done on his big toe (excruciatingly painful, apparently - serves him right!) so he still looks respectable on smart occasions.
- By suejaw Date 15.09.10 09:32 UTC

> That was one reason I thought my foot might be a good idea it shouldnt be a problem

What if you wanted to wear a lovely pair of strappy sandles/heels? The tattoo would probably be seen then, not so obvious I agree. But I think you need to think long term here not what looks good now..
- By bettyonthebus Date 15.09.10 11:15 UTC
Feet are very painful to get tattooed as there's little to no fat on the foot and when the foot is flexed during the tattooing the skin is stretched tight so there's a real risk of inexperienced tattooists nudging the bone. It's up there in pain levels with the spine and the genitals (and you can imagine how much that would hurt!).

If you do decide to go for it make sure you find a tattooist that is experienced in tattooing feet - a lot of tattooists won't go near feet as they don't always heal properly due to the constant movement of the skin and daily stress the foot goes through. They need to drill the ink in just far enough that it takes properly but not so far that they make you bleed heavily. Feet do tend to bleed though during tattooing and swell up a lot immediately after. They can also remain swollen for a few days to weeks afterwards.

If you decide to go for it make sure that you can stay off your feet for a few days afterwards, no socks or shoes to help with the healing and be prepared to have it redone in a few years. Most tattoos will last for 10 years before they need re-colouring but with feet and hands it can be as little as 5 years.

Good luck with whatever you decide.

Midlife crisis is a great place to be! Maybe just look for something less permanent??!! ;)

Maybe we need a new topic "suggestions for a midlife crisis" please list

I think people are being a little harsh, I like to think that as someone with tattoos I still have class and elegance.

Everyone is entitled to their own opinion but I feel it is an individual decision and should be respected as such.

Some people think my dog is ugly, I think he's beautiful.............
