Topic Dog Boards / General / New regulations for Trainers and behaviourists?

Please see this link:

Apparently the ABTC is a  new regulatory body  being put together to register all trainers and behaviourists in the UK...What exactly will this mean for trainers and behaviourists? will it be a mandatory requirement or is this just another organisation like the APDT etc? If it is to become mandatory what will the critera be to qualify?

There are so many trainers and behaviourists with many different backgrounds, some academic, lots of letters after their name etc and some who have many years of hands on experience but with no formal qualifications at all, the number of courses available and organisations to join is an absolute minefield. recently there is also a great deal of conflicting views between these bodies with regards to training and behaviour, Thus, Many trainers still work completely independently. How will new legislation affect dog training clubs where many of the trainers are simply volunteers?

I am interested to hear from trainers and behaviourists out there? if you are aware of this how will it affect you?

I don't know if they have any 'legal' standing or which regulatory body they are accountable to, or if they are a self appointed 'Board'  but I do note on the 'contact us' page that the person to be contacted is David Montgomery.

If it is the David Montgomery I am familiar with (professionally) he is heavily involved if not the founder of Compass Education.

Compass advertise their animal related educational courses and have done for some years in the popular Dog Magazines - Dogs Today and Your Dog etc.

They also had links with Institute of Animal Care Education.

It may be similar scheme to the Kennel Club's Instructor's Accreditation scheme which tries to ensure that all Trainers and Assessors of the KC Good Citizen Dog Scheme are competent at what they do.

Other than that, no ideas.
