Topic Dog Boards / Health / Cream to put on dry sore skin?
- By helenmd [gb] Date 30.08.10 20:12 UTC
My Aussie girl has licked a couple of small areas and made them sore and a bit scabby( on the top of her front leg and in her armpit).I think its a reaction to flea shampoo as I bathed her twice last week as we had a couple of very badly infested dogs in the grooming salon where she comes to work with me.
I noticed her licking this morning so put some Dermacton on the areas but she seems to like the taste and just licked even more(it always works on my other dogs)-so I gave her half a Piriton tablet and bathed her in Coatex Aloe Vera and Oatmeal shampoo to wash off the Dermacton plus some Kelco skin moisturising conditioner which seemed to do the trick.
This evening though she is licking again(though not constantly) have given her another half a Piriton tablet but its not helping.I've also tried putting some vetwrap round the top of her leg but she just pulled it off.
Obviously I will take her to the vet in the morning(wish I had done that today!) but I just need to get her through tonight.
Is there anything else I could get from the chemist(assuming I can find a late night one on a Bank Holiday) that I could put on her sore bits that might help? And does anyone know if I can increase the dosage of the Piriton?
Thanks for any ideas.Don't really want to bother the vet tonight as its not an emergency.

Sudocrem is quite soothing - you will have to apply it sparingly and distract her for a short while until it absorbs :)

No idea about Piriton - not something I have ever given to my dogs

Hi, sounds very much like hotspots to me. The area has an infection which may get worse or just clear up on their own. My previous dog used to get them every year from licking the same spot over and over He was allergic to flea bites and would always get a hotspot or two if he picked up a flea. They are extremely itchy and probably painful, thus the reason why the dog can't leave them alone.

In the past my vet has had to shave the area and he's been put on steroid cream to soothe and heal the area.

Hope she is feeling better this morning.

Im a fan of sudocrem cream for any hotspots or dry skin area on our dogs...it clears it in a few days.
Hope it works for your dog.

Never used sudocrem, but what I did find worked very well was bathing the area in hibiscrub daily.

Calendula cream is excellent and was prescribed by my vet but suggested we buy it from the chemist or health food store as it was cheaper that way.

would also suggest sudocrem, reasonably inexpensive, keeps well and works.

Hi,thanks for all the replies.Tried Sudocrem and it seems to be working.I  stuck her in the bath first and smothered her in more of the Kelco skin mosturising conditioner and rubbed it in on her sore bits.Apparently you can just leave the conditioner on and not rinse it off but when I tried that she just started licking it.So it did get rinsed off but lightly. Then after I dried her I put  Sudocrem on(she didn't seem so keen to lick it off as she did the Dermacton thankfully)-and after all that her sore bits have improved-so not sure which bit of the treatment worked! Am still giving her the Piriton as well and it looks like I won't have to take her to the vet now.
