Topic Dog Boards / Health / Great dane with swollen, pus filled chin??
- By baillesmum [gb] Date 29.08.10 16:37 UTC
Hi all, it's been a while since I've been on here ... Hope you're all well.

Diesel has a problem which has appeared relatively overnight. His chin is very swollen and covered in sore,
almost pus(sy) looking sores :(

It's swollen to probably around tennis ball size, and he is off his food a little, though not completely.
He's a little down in the dumps today, though he was tearing round the garden earlier ..

I'll ring the vet first thing, just wondered if you guys had any idea what the problem could be.. I'm thinking
it could be down to his run in with a hedgehog a few weeks ago, when he appeared from the woods carrying one in
his mouth, needless to say, I picked all the spikes from his chin, though it is possible I could have missed
something .. Could this be a factor do you think??

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Sharon

It is possible that a part of the hedgehog spike did brake in his chin and has caused an infection. As tomorrow is a Bank holiday I would phone the vet now and discuss the matter it is possible that the vet would wish to either see the dog now or order a short course of ABs till there is an open surgery.

Crap, completely forgot that it's a bank holiday tomorrow :(
Thanks, I might try ringing them, just to see if I could get some advice.

Thanks

It is always the way if a dog is going to need the attention of a vet then the choice time is always weekend or if possible a bank holiday - Boxing day being the best choice. Yes, I would do something to day infection in the head should not wait for a vet's opinion.

Could it be an infected salivary gland?  sounds like a Vets visit for some AB's or ointment

Hey Brainless, how are you? As I said it's been an age since I was last
on here ... recognising some of the posters though :)

Took him this morning, as the vet was open. They seem to think that he has been
bitten or stung, and has taken a bad reaction to it. The hedgehog incident was too long
ago, as she felt it had to be something more recent than that. So 10 day course of
ab's and hopefully that should dry it up completely. She weighed him as I was worried
he'd been off his food a little lately, obviously this has been playing on him for a while
before the symptoms became noticeable :(, but he was just under the ten stone and heart
was good, so all in all, she was pleased with him. Fingers crossed that will be him on the mend
now, thanks all
