There are reports in my area of a considerable parvo out break, 14 dogs are reorted to have died.
The outbreak started in a not too near to me estate but concern is that it could spread.

I do not vaccinate every year.
My 2 oldies were vaccinated for the first 8 years of life and no longer (they're 11+ yrs) I am up to date with my youngest 2, but my mid age girl is out of date by a year.

Has anybody else had reports on increase in parvo in their area? As it is extremely unlikely that I will walk my dogs in the same area as the outbreak or that they would walk their dogs in my area should I vaccinate?

There's an outbreak of parvo in the Midlands too. I don't want to sound scaremongering, but vaccinated dogs have a better survival rate than unvaccinated ones.

I thought parvo was predominantly a problem for pups and teenagers un-vaccinated and not oldies with a history of vaccination or mid range age with recent vaccination history.

I am considering taking my so say out of date girls for a just a parvo jab.

As a side note, whilst I was on holiday in Cornwall earlier this month I heard about an increase in kennel cough whilst queuing for meat in the butchers, I heard it again in the pet shop and a local kennels had also told me they have seen more cases than usual.  A local grapevine is generally quite well informed!

Can you ring around vets in your area to ask them if they have experienced an increase in parvo?  You could also a few for their advice on vaccination - might be helpful to get a consensus view before deciding.

Like you however I recently did some research on parvo (for a friend that was going to the game fair in an area where parvo had been reported).  I also understood the risks were much higher for unvaccinated dogs rather than those with a history of vaccination.

When my small 6 week pup had Parvo earlier this year I kept a watch on my other 2 dogs even though they were up to date on their jabs.  They had been sniffing around and licking the new pup before she had been diagnosed with Parvo and at that time I thought her upset tum was due to  new home stress, so allowed the dogs to get to know her.( she was hospitalised and diagnosed 2 days later ) My GSD had no reaction at all but my spaniel (8 years old) had runny bums and a little sickness for a couple of days (about 10 days after meeting the pup). This could be coincidence and nothing to do with the pups Parvo, however I did wonder if my spaniel was fighting off the Parvo and the vaccination prevented it from developing.

I would want to speak to the Vets concerned before worrying unnecessarily.  When I lived in Berkshire our local paper regularly ran a similar story and I would ring the Vet quoted in the report and they were always sad cases of enteritis that hadn't been sent for laboratory confirmation.

i heard of two dogs this week in the supermarket of all places.  don't know if its parvo but the dogs sounded pretty sick.  Has them on 'doggie actimel' and a liquid food and something else.

I was a little wary taking mine for a walkm of  yesterday and they sniffed more than usually (typical) so spent a lot of time getting them off.  One has been slightly sick this morning so keeping an eye on her.  They have been vacinated but not yearly.  I always used to do this but from what I've read its not necessary.  The first year I panicked like mad but nothing has happened.

One of the biggest practices in my area was actually featured on the TV news report, they said they had PTS several dogs and had 2 in hospitalised that they were treating, they are my vets also.

OH took our old GR for an 'old lady check up' last week and they made mention of the fact that her jabs were out of date and that parvo was about, OH took the decision to have the parvo only jab, so now I feel that I should also jab my old BC and my mid age Sheltie, my two youngest Shelties had full vaccination 2 months ago.

Where I get confused with all of this vaccination stuff is how long it all lasts.

I don't like doing it but I did get the 3 older girls re-vaccinated when I got the 2 new pups 2+ years ago.

It's been on our local news now 5 times and does concern me, but I don't want to fall into the jab all cut all that vets seem to advocate.

It recommends 3 years between parvo vaccinations.

Its just as important to vaccinate older dogs for Parvo, vaccinations do not work on an accumalative dose, it doesnt matter if you vaccinate your dog every year. Older dogs have less resistance to infection so you could argue that they need vaccinations more. Dont know why you see older dogs with parvo less than puppies?

I was involved in the clinical trials for Nobi-vac Parvo C and was told by the Glasgow RVC who conducted the test, that my dogs' titre level was so high that they'd never need boosting again.  But we all need to make our own decision. :)

That makes a lot of sense westcoast, I have read and believe that once a dog has immunity then it has immunity for 7 years at least; most probably for life.

We all know that vaccinated dogs can and do die from the deseases they are vaccinated against.

As you say we all have to do our own research and make up our own minds :)

The most important think for me Perry is to be aware.  If a dog with extreme, bloody and smelly diarrhoea is taken to the Vet immediately, then parvo virus is treatable.

My potential owners are coming from all over the country and it would be useful to know. I have just rung my own vet to find out if there is any problem in our area at the moment there is no outbreak. I will obviously take all necessary precautions wherever the people come from, but would be interested to know the "hot spots".

That's what I was thinking WestCoast.  Obviously people are scared of parvo but sometimes the rumour mill goes into overdrive when there are actually no proven cases.

Good idea... there have been confirmed cases in South Lowestoft, Suffolk

confirmed cases in northampton as well

One thing I've wondered is....my wee dog had parvo as a pup and still gets his vaccs for it...but do dogs who have had it then have better immunity ...same immunity or does it make them more likely to catch it again..

Like for diseases for people...once they have it they are not likely to get it again....such as chicken pox...
