well i have seen it all now , i recieved an email frome Horsequest which now has a dogquest page where you can advertise pups , being nosey i had a look !! Bassadors , and a few other designer cross breeds but a basset/labrador , short legged scent hound combined with a lively gundog dont envy the owners with that one.

I can see how the term 'designer dogs' came about. The sort of people who buy these dogs really seem to think they have something special.
One of the (rather snooty) Mums at my Daughters school turned up one day with a tiny, very fluffy puppy in her arms. I asked what breed she was, she told me proudly "A shitpoo" (yes really!!) I said, "A cross?" ..........Well, if looks could kill.. :)
I thought all dogs shit poo! I mean, what else do they do at that end?

Laughing so hard at the thought I can barely wipe myself off the floor :-)

It must be me but I just couldn't bring myself to call it that, even if I owned one!

now then...was there something about a dog being like its owner, or was it the other way round??

JC. To live with a Basset you realy need to love the breed, they are not the 'most' responsive or biddable of hounds and to cross it with a lively gundog beggars belief. I get saddened by the amount of people as it is, who fall for a BH pup and then find they just can't cope with them. In the last five years I've been offered four and it's not as if there are that many around.
theres a woman who lives near me, brought a basset from a pet shop and sadly lost it a few weeks later. she now has another from a reputable breeder, anyway she took it to the vet as it had a problem with its eye and asked him how the dog got it - vets answer is because its a designer dog!! as you can imagine she was so upset!

I have usually seen this cross called a Shipoo.
There must be some very happy poodle males around getting all that extra nookie.
Are male poodles particularly keen studs that they seem to be used all the time in these crosses?

i think male poodles are the same as any other males. they are used for the desiner 'curly coat' bandwagon, supposedly producing non allergy crosses like the labeadoodle, which can actually moult

Oops, that's a spelling error / typo which
reads like it should be on a whole other forum!!
The thing I find strange is that if one asks the poodle cross owner if they would have
either of the breeds that have been used they generally say no, and are often vehement about not wanting a poodle! Very odd

Slightly off topic but.. our Sophie is in love and I mean love with a miniture poodle at ring craft, and it made me giggle when I thought of the potential names.
Bullpoo, Bulloodle, or poomastiff :):)

I found an ad for a dachshund x chihuahua - the mind boggles, it seems that anything goes in designer dogs if a breeder thinks some someone will buy the puppies then lets try it.

I saw the weirdest thing the other day......... Two dogs which clearly had Basset Hound in them as they had that shape of body but they had the heads of Mastiffs. Really quite strange!

Yeh, the same forum Novas' naughty sentences should be on...eh Nova
my OH was sitting next to a person at our club who was bragging how much his designer labradoodle had cost him, of course he had been mentioning this most weeks to new people, my OH said you paid how much for a cross breed of course quite a few people heard him and stopped to see what the response was and he was told that it would not be long before they where recognised by the kc as it had been mentioned on crufts about the kc going to register them , after my husband stopped laughing he said sorry but not in my lifetime you have been conned, needless to say the gentleman has never come back to club , and i said to my hubby did you have to be like that to him , he said well someone needs to say they are nothing but crossbreeds and they cost more than a pedigree kc reg dog.

I think one of the worst I've come across, is a rescue BH cross with what was thought to be border collie! But BH and Mastiff, God how awful.

LOL! I'm not the only one then.
When I was taking a young male Chihuahua Long Coat to ringcraft, he fell in love with a St Bernard bitch. Talk about aiming high! But I like his confidence! :-)
What an interesting article - all 'oodle' potential purchasers should read this before buying one....
