We have an adorable 2yr old rescue male gsp (have had him one year) and most of that time he has had sore/itchy eyes. They get puffy and dry looking and bald. Have had numerous trips to the vets and the usual routine of antibiotics and eye drops, which may relieve but not cure. It returns again and seems to flare up regularly but not connected with the weather or seasons etc. Any ideas? Thankyou!

Has your vet checked that your dog has no eye conditions like entropion where the eyelashes turn inwards?
If not I think I'd be asking for a referral to an eye specialist.

Could it be caused by fox mite or an allergy. A ffriend of mine has a dog that is bald round eyes and scratches around his head/ears. he has been tested as allergic to house mites, and the yeast produced in his own ears.
That sounds interesting, did the vets test for the allergy? His ears are fine, so I guess it could be dust mites or similar? Thank you!

They had some skin tests done which identified the allergies. Next step was to create a serum, based on the things he was found to react to, to be injected fortnightly aimed at desensitising him to the things he was allergic to. They have only had one injection so far so too early to say if it will work. He too is a GSP. Not sure of costs but he was insured so they covered it. His own vet referred him to a skin/allergy specialist. I think there was also certain types of grass he was allergic to so at this time of year his problem exacerbates.HTH
