I need some advice, my neice has a 2 yr old Shar Pei bitch which has had her first attack of FSF the vet gave her injections.
My neice is not sure wether they are going to allow her to have a litter, but the breeder is still breeding for the mother.

I have told my neice this is out of order but she said aslong as the new owners are told then they can still breed from her.
I would like everyones opinion on this as i don't think they should breed from her at all and they should stop breeding from the mother.

You are right , both of these bitches should not be bred from . They should both be spayed.
The only way to try and stop more dogs suffering the condition is to stop breeding from affected dogs and be more responsible. The breeder is obviously only thinking of the money she is making.
I hope your niece is more responsible and does the right thing.

Apparently now they are saying the vet is not sure if it is FSF as there is no known test. plus she has not had all the other symptoms but i know that with any illness they won't always get the other signs.
They saying it could just be a virus, yet i thought any good vet would have done a thorough check up including bloods, urine and xrays as i found out last night her back legs pop out of place alot, Which suggest to me hip dysplasia which is another good reason not to be breeding from her.

The vet gave the dog 2 injections one was an anti inflammatory and the other was painkillers as far as i am aware.
Surely because there is no test to show FSF then they should air on the side of caution and not breed.

I got into an argument with my neice last night because she kept saying them and the vets are not sure if it is FSF and that they can still breed aslong as the new owners are informed..
The breeder is her step mums brother and has bred for years and his dogs have won shows and stuff, But from what i have read online is that you do not know if they have FSF until they have an attack or post mortum.

I have told her if they breed the dogs i will be reporting them for animal neglect and cruelty as i have read how painful this is and its not fair on the dog or future litters..

The vets have told them what medication she needs if she has another one but i have read that it does not always work.
I have tried to explain that most Shar Peis with this disease do not live past 5 yrs old but she is having none of it.

It angers me that they will probably go ahead and breed them anyway all because the vet is not sure if it is FSF.
I have spoke to a breeder of 35 yrs and even he says not to breed them but my neice said how does the breeder know what it is they have never met the dogs and don't know anything about it...

I bet you are angry , I would be too , it sounds like your niece has made up her mind no matter what!

I have a very healthy but now old and weak shar-pei he is over 12 years old now. We have been extremely lucky as he has had no other health problems other than ingrown lashes when he was a pup. He had the entropian operation and we've never looked back since.

I know a breeder who shows and has bred shar-pei for over 25 year and she has had a lot of trouble trying to rule out the health problems with the breed . Her lines are quite good as I understand but she has not had a dog live past eight. When she told me this I couldn't believe it. I feel very lucky.

I also know a man who has a shar-pei with FSF and she suffers quite badly , he is always at the vets for treatment. Poor girl I feel for her when her hocks are all swollen up. But he took her on knowing she had the condition  and he looks after her well and when she has an episode she gets her treatment straight away.

I do hope your niece does the right thing .

Maybe you can discuss it with the kennel club, let them know they are registering unhealthy dogs.  They might listen especially as it is a bad health condition.  No one in their right mind should breed from this dog or its mother.  Would the dogs trust come and advise and explain where most of these dogs end up due to high vets bills.

If your neice is adament on breeding the ad could read 'Shar-pei's for sale.  comes with bad health and a loving family environment.  Breeder will give £!!!! towards the dogs vet bills for the first five years.  After that you can pay your own if you still have a dog.  Breeder will give you a deposit to secure the dog.'

Yes it might not have been anything like FSF but itsnot a risk i would be willing to take.
I give up trying to get through to them as i have now been told to keep my nose out.

Well perhaps telling them that they could end up sued it they knowingly breed from a bitch with health issues.

Also what is the hurry they could wait until she is 4 to be sure it isn't this problem. 

Who would breed from a  bitch that was unhealthy even if it was not genetic, as it will put a strain on her she doesn't need, and her immune system may be less able to cope with.

She has only just turned 2 yrs old aswell.
They said her legs pop out all the time anyway so it could just be that so like i said in a previous post that suggests to me hip dysplasia so they should not be breeding from her anyway.

I have been called all the names you can think of because my concern is the welfare of the dogs not the emotions and feelings of the people that own them.
I just can't believe my neice would go against everything i have shown her and told her about this condition, But as the breeder said its never been seen in his lines before so it can't be FSF.

I don't care if he wins at shows with these dogs that don't mean that they don't have this problem.
I was told Shar Pei's are meant to have tests done every 2 yrs but she has had none.

It really angers me how people can put animals through all this just so they can make money or get trophies.

My neice turned around and said i was going to allow my Rottwiler to have a litter yes this is true i was until i found out she has Hyper extention of the hocks so she has now been spayed since structure is inherited i did not want this passing on to her litter.
