Hello, could anyone advise me on how to go about getting a dog passport? I would need it for July 2011. Thanks!
- By Jeangenie [gb] Date 16.08.10 09:43 UTC
Here is the Defra page with all the details, but basically you have your dog microchipped (no need to do it again if it already has been!) then vaccinated against rabies. 21 days later your vet will take a blood sample and send it to be tested for immunity, and if all is well your vet will issue the passport. Your dog can then be taken out of the country but can't return until 6 calendar months from the date the blood sample was taken.

As you can see the process takes about 7 months (longer if the first blood test result isn't adequate and needs to be repeated) so start now!
- By perrodeagua [gb] Date 16.08.10 09:50 UTC
Going to Paris?  I'm thinking about it, better decide soon.
- By SLF [gb] Date 16.08.10 10:01 UTC
Yes, thinking about Paris! Haven't taken any "holiday" as such this year and don't plan to. So was thinking I could combine a week's holiday in france with Paris 2011... 7 months! I better get moving then!
- By SLF [gb] Date 16.08.10 10:01 UTC
He's already microchipped so I guess it's just the blood test?
- By SLF [gb] Date 16.08.10 10:02 UTC
Also, after the six months, is there a time limit for when he can't come back again?
- By Jeangenie [gb] Date 16.08.10 10:17 UTC
As long as you keep the rabies boosters up to date (they can't be even a day late or you need to start the whole process again) then the passport lasts indefinitely.

It's made slightly more complicated if you have the booster done in another country because notall countries' requirements for booster interval is the same (a rabies vaccine given in the UK will last 3 years, whereas the same vaccine done in France will legally require boostering in 12 months) so you need to go by the booster date given in the passport.

Were plaaning on going to Paris, had the blood test just waiting. What I was shocked at in regards to the pet passport shceme, is the need to have a vet administer wormer and flea treatment 24-48hrs before coming back to the UK, despite if your dog is up to date. So you have to a find a vet abroad. Just thought I would point this out because I wasn't fully aware of this until recently

and no matter how often you travel this has to be done each and every time.
- By AlisonGold [gb] Date 16.08.10 10:42 UTC
The Vets abroad are very clued up on the pet passport. I do not flea treat my dogs and so having it done on holiday doesn't worry me. If I did I would be tempted to NOT flea treat that particular month so that the dog is only getting the one dose for that month. Last time I was there, the receptionist did the flea treatment and I was allowed to administer the worm tablet. I also don't worm the dogs before going on holiday as I know it will be done for the journey back.
- By SLF [gb] Date 16.08.10 11:40 UTC
Ok, so how do you go about finding a decent vet in that area? I think I will book mine in for the vacc and blood test as there isn't that much time to spare is there!

Thanks for the advice.
- By triona [gb] Date 16.08.10 11:46 UTC
Does aybody know how long it takes to get rabies results back after a test?
- By triona [gb] Date 16.08.10 11:50 UTC
Never mind I rung our vets and they said its about 2 weeks
- By oscar [gb] Date 16.08.10 12:54 UTC
If you are showing abroad, most shows have vets that will do the vet checking usually for a small fee.

If anyone wants a PETs Guide PM me.

It is one I send to clients before they return to the UK.
Please ensure you try to get the Microchip done on day 1 and the rabies done on day 2.
The control is getting stricter.
If you have to get it done on the same day ensure the time is entered.

Remember the PETs is not valid until six months after the blood taken date.

How long does the Rabies vaccine last?      If an animal came ito the UK last December when is it likely to need a new Rabies shot?
- By Jeangenie [gb] Date 16.08.10 20:12 UTC
It depends what it says in the passport. Which country issued the passport - they have different rules.
- By ChristineW Date 16.08.10 20:44 UTC
S'ok, I checked Larissa's passport.  Rabies is next due by 9th May 2012.
- By welshie [gb] Date 17.08.10 05:07 UTC
so please can you make it clear for me (dumb old blonde) exactly the timing before you go abroad AND coming back when and WHERE you have the flea and worming done?

Before you go abroad follow your rountine, up untill the most you are going away, then its proberbly best to miss that month, as you need to visit a vet between 24-48hrs before coming back into the UK. My understanding is if you take your normal wormer and flea treatment, the vet will administer that for you, rather than having to purchase another brand. There is no need to visit the vet before going as far as I know. Hope this makes sense

Only certain brands of tick and tapewormer are acceptable; not all of them contain the prescribed chemicals.
- By Jeangenie [gb] Date 17.08.10 07:43 UTC
Information about worming and tick treatment.
- By arc [gb] Date 17.08.10 12:05 UTC
I was a bit confused by the DEFRA site. I found this site with step by step instructions, they seem really clear.

http://www.dogsaway.co.uk/getting_passport/index.htm

I think you can also pay and have them sort it all out for you!

We were hoping to take our lil dog with us to France this year, but left it too late because of the 6 month before return thing. We will take him next year, it's going to be strange without him.

Be very careful not to be even a day late or you'll need to start the whole process again.

> Does anybody know how long it takes to get rabies results back after a test?

about 3 weeks.

As one of mine failed her titre test, the next one I did I had vaccinated, and then had a second vaccination a month later.

You can then titre test after the first vaccination, if it comes back too low you can take blood again straight away because the second vaccine should have kicked in.
- By Gizmoo [gb] Date 17.08.10 15:48 UTC
How much does it generally cost to get everything done?
I was under the impression it was quite expensive?
- By perrodeagua [gb] Date 17.08.10 16:04 UTC
Around £200 I think!!
- By Brainless [gb] Date 17.08.10 16:50 UTC Edited 17.08.10 16:52 UTC
Mine cost me just over £25 for each Rabies vaccine and £125 for the blood draw (but she had to be sedated as wouldn't sit still for it) and test.

Then we were charged £55 for the actual Passport.

Only recently completed.

You will also possibly require a health check, fit to fly check, depending on where you are going, and in my case as I willb e flyuing in January an Acclimation certificate to show the dog can cope with temperatures below 46'F.  We just ahve to hope the temperature won't be forecast to be below 20'F.
- By harkback Date 17.08.10 18:57 UTC
WOW EXPENSIVE vet!!!  Charging for the passport??? Once the titre is valid the passport is issued at no extra charge. Never had that fee applied and I have 11 dogs with passports.  £125 for the blood draw - yikes.  My last 6 cost £40 each last year.  Also my 3 imports over the past 6 years have beenm similar costings to what I have paid here (USA / Germany / Sweden).
- By tommyc2009 [gb] Date 17.08.10 19:52 UTC
My vet charges same as Brainless for passport, all in all approx £200 just waiting for blood results now, ready for world show next year
- By perrodeagua [gb] Date 17.08.10 20:43 UTC
Where r u based every vet in Manchester charges around £200 which I do think is extortionate as it's a lot cheaper in Spain!
- By briedog [gb] Date 18.08.10 07:21 UTC
mine was £150 two years ago her vacc was a three year so due again in march.going to do just in case i go to paris.
then the fcr may be vacc as well
- By SLF [gb] Date 18.08.10 08:14 UTC
Well my pup had the rabies vacc last night and is booked in for the blood test. It was £46 for the vacc.
- By harkback Date 18.08.10 14:07 UTC
I double checked all my vet records for the cost of my last lot of pet passport charges.  TOTAL at the end per dog including the passport was roughly (rounded up) £75 per dog.  Including chip, rabies, vacc, blood draw for titre, passport.  This was completed in November 2009.  The initial rabies vaccine charge of that was £25 plus vat.

My imports have been roughly the same, over a 6 year period but allowing for inflation all work out about same as the UK costs.

Most of you seem to have seem horrifically expensive vets for what is a routine practice.   Maybe they are trying to make the most of the current UK Pet Passport long winded process before 2012 and the supposed deregulation of individual country requirements within the EU.
- By perrodeagua [gb] Date 18.08.10 15:04 UTC
It's about time they stopped it now for the countries such as Sweden, where like us they've had no reported rabies cases for many, many years.

If the government etc. want us to breed healthy dogs together it would make it much easier for us.

Now the decision is do I mate with a dog here this time, then in 2012 go abroad LOL!
- By Brainless [gb] Date 18.08.10 18:24 UTC
Ooh I forget the Microchip at my Vet is £28
- By Gizmoo [gb] Date 19.08.10 11:13 UTC
I think £200 is quite reasonable, I thought it was going to be more. Already Microchipped so would just be the blood tests, vaccs and passport fee.
Might be something I'd look into, would be lovely to have the option to travel with my dog if I wanted. :o)
Thank you.
- By sam Date 19.08.10 13:45 UTC
slf, if its the same as this year then there was a vet service at the world show to do theworm/tick treatments
- By sam Date 19.08.10 16:03 UTC
likewise all my 10 passports have been around £200 and dont appear to have gone up in price since 2006.
- By Kiarazoom [gb] Date 22.10.10 11:40 UTC
So does anyone know for sure if there will be a vet at the Paris WDS that can do the tick/worm treatment 24/48hrs before we leave? I cant find any information on the website about it and I am a bit worried about going out there and struggling to get this done before we return! Want to get organised and make it all as stress free as possible in advance.
- By harkback Date 22.10.10 16:58 UTC
Usually the vets in attendance will have a booth / table for stamping passports at the World Shows.  Denmark last year did not have any information about this on the (general) show site until the month before the show.  However it was mentioned on the site dedicated to the World Agility champs running at the show on the agility site - I found it by accident early on in the year.  Maybe worth looking at the various sections of the show, or try googling it.  Really you should not worry about it, even if there is no one at the show there are vet clinics (some open 24 hours) on the way to the ports that do this all the time, you may just have to allow an extra day of sightseeing!
- By Jeff (Moderator) Date 22.10.10 17:09 UTC
What are your travel plans? You could get it done in the UK before you go if you are only away briefly.
Jeff.
- By klb [gb] Date 24.10.10 20:53 UTC
I was at the Campionat de France in Paris this year (the show that will run back to back with World show next year) and there were vets checking every dogs microchip/passport and were available for completion of passports later in the day -  this is usual practice in Europe so I wouldn't worry.

You could always email the question to mondialeparis@centrale-canine.fr

When is the World show next year?
- By klb [gb] Date 24.10.10 21:31 UTC
The world show and the Campionnat de france will be held from 7 - 10 july. The various FCI groups are scheduled on alternate days so you can do both shows in one trip  eg FCI Group 5 world show Saturday 9 july / Champ de france Friday 8th July

I was wondering what the whole protocol is when you take a dog abroad for a show like this.

When you arrive as an overseas dog what do you have to do? What if anything does the dog have to go through before you actually enter the ring?

Like for our CH shows and Crufts you have an entry pass, you then go and find your area, collect your number and then wait for your class. Whats involved in shows like you mentioned klb?
- By klb [ru] Date 25.10.10 19:22 UTC
It varies a little from country to country :)

First of all entry is made either online or paper - you can only enter one breed class which are either one of the age catagories or Open / Working / Champion. Payment can sometimes be made on the day at the show for UK visitor if you can't pay by credit card, otherwise you need to do bank transfer in Euros which almost doubles the entry fee. ( We can't issue personal cheques or do online bank to bank payments in Euros in UK )

Passes are issued but often arrive very close to the date of the show - we have had occassions where passes have not arrived before we have travelled and had to see secretary on arrival = extra stress :)

You must arrive within specified times as dogs are either individually inspected by the vet - microchip and passport is checked OR some counties do not have a formal vet in procedure BUT there are vets on the door and they will pull over any dog they wish to inspect ( a bit like going through customs )

Benches are not generally allocated unless you are given the option to pre book with entry. Most shows opperate a first come first served basis and most exhibitors seem to take their own cages and set up mini camps around the halls.  Benches are not like those in UK but large floor level cages. Ring numbers are collected from the ring in the hour before judging starts.

Ring procedure is different - all dogs are shown in number order, each dog is seen individually and graded. Dependant on the breed standard and country you may find dogs are offically measrured for height (even breed where we don't measure) / weights / and I have had microchips checked by the judges to verify the exibit is the animal recorded on entry.  Often the dogs are moved much more than in UK - at one breed club show we gaited for no less than 7 times round a very big ring !! All this takes approx 5mins - 7mis / dog and the judge dictates a full written report on each dog a copy of which is given to owner at end of judging.  Dogs are placed 1 - 4 in order of merit if graded excellent or very good

Not all class winners compete for the "national ticket" (CAC)  or "international ticket" (CACIB) and at international shows different rules apply to the CAC and CACIB. There are also different rules country by country around the issue of CAC's. Basis rules ::  Only dogs graded excellent can challenge for CAC or CACIB , puppies and veterans do not challenge for either ticket, only dogs over 15mths can challenge for CACIB but a younger dog could win a CAC, and in some counties Champions do not challenge for the "National Ticket - (CAC) only the CACIB. Confused yet :)  It does take some working out but basically the CAC will be awarded first IF the winner is under 15mths the CACIB will be awarded to the best dog of age to recieve it from remaining winners OR if the CAC winner is over 15mths it will also win the CACIB. In countries where Champions do not challenge for CAC the CACIB is awarded to the BEST OF SEX between the CAC  and winner Champion class. Bet your confused now ..LOL

Each country has its own rules re number of CAC's needed to be a Champion, some breeds need work certificates (eg Field trail awards, tracking tests etc) before any title can be held. Many countries have no SHOW champion award.

Dogs and bitches judged as in UK and Best of Breed declared. The BOB winner MUST present for the group or the ticket is withdrawn.  If you win the group you MUST attend for Best in Show =  makes travel plans intersting unless you are on last day of the show :)

Every show has a removal time - no exibit is allowed to leave before that time which is usually as group judging starts.

Vets at the shows are familiar with passport system and if you have the meds they will do passport verification at the show - you cannot travel home until minimum of 24hrs after the vet has done the passport.
