Is there anywhere that you can look up what health tests should be done for any particular breed .Of course I can always ask here but just wondered where one would generally look

Generally the breed clubs.  the Kennel club Accredited breeder listing lists those that are required and recommended, but usually there are more.

Find the KC more or less lists the same things for each breed so definitely the breed clubs would be a good start although there are a few or them that are somewhat blinkered and refuse to accept the obvious. A good judge of the opinion being given is to ask about HD if the reply is our breed don't get that then walk away you are wasting your time, all breeds have some degree of HD .

Thank you thats useful. I was just wondering after a passing conversation with someone who had yorkie pups. I had asked about what health tests they needed and had mum and dad been tested for anything. If I had been looking to buy any breed where I would go to find out.
I have so many conversations with people its nice to know where to point them when you dont know the answers
I am certainly no expert !
Does the HD and hip scoring apply to all breeds then ?

HD is there in all breeds but it is not so important in the smaller breeds as they do not carry the weight nor in most cases jump fences. There is a construction fault common in the smaller breeds luxating patella (loose kneecap) there are time when it causes no problem but it is something I would want to check on also umbilical hernia and mouths that are too small to allow the teeth to sit property.

I would always have patella and eyes on any toy breed.  Heart is good too.  One of my first toy Poodles, back in the 70's turned out to have PRA.  I feel very strongly about breeding in problems with toy breeds - especially when they can be avoided.

So many toy people don't test.  I will stop here before I start ranting!

Dont worry folks when I am seriously looking for another dog or 2 ( I know the 2 breeds I want when the time is right) I know where I shall be starting to get my advice and referrals to good  responsible breeders !. I just enjoy chatting to peole about dogs and learning as I go.
Jean I agree with you and not just toys. I have one dog that if I had more knowlegde at the time I would have done differently , yes we seem to be lucky so far but she is young and I wont go that route again now I have learned so much from here..

In the USA there is an OFA scheme for Patella testing, but no official scheme here but certainly something toy breed breeders should be looking at checking with an orthopaedic vet before breeding.

Totally agree with Barbara on this important issue.  (Feel strongly having bought a Toy Poodle years ago that needed both back legs operated on.)

I won't even decide to breed from a bitch until an orthopaedic vet gives me the ok.
