I've been thinking for a while, about starting a reading group for some of the locals in the pub. I was wondering if anyone has ever done this or even been a member of such a group. What were your experiences and what did you get out of it?

I love to read and can think of dozens of others that I know would enjoy it as well as appreciating the social side of it but I am concerned about having such a mix of people with hugely varying tastes to accommodate. Or is that the whole point, to try something new?
How is it decided what books will be read? and who decides? I want to keep it fun and informal but at the same time I do like everything to have some sort of structure!

Gosh, I do over think things sometimes! Any advice or suggests would be greatly received!  :)

I spend every spare minute playing with, walking with, talking to, eating with and snoring with my dog. I have no time for reading, so sorry no advice here I'm afraid.

If it were me I would have a mix of old favourites - members could recommend one in turn - and also try something new. I am an avid reader and have my favourite topics but am often pleasantly surprised when I have tried something else that has been bought for me as a present or been recommended. But you don't all have to read the same book - that can get expensive for members if you all have to buy a copy as the library probably wouldn't have enough for you all - you could have a variety of books that are read in turn by each of you. Maybe you could all contribute a book each and take it in turns to read them - and perhaps do a small feedback on each book read.......different people will have different opinions and tastes....... but taking care not to give away too much of the plot and thus spoil it for the next reader.

Good luck with your group :-)

I joined a book group last year: we generally meet once a month except for August.  Currently there are 10 regular members and one or two absences each time.

Books are chosen by recommendation and might be something one member has already read or possibly something that is topical or local.  Generally we avoid new releases due to cost and ideally choose something that can be easily found in the library, as well as on eBay or Amazon marketplace.  Fast readers will also loan to each other if possible.  One member is really good at keeping the conversation on topic and she tends to steer us all to give our views and opinions on the book we've just read and then we all share a list (and views) on the other books we've been reading, or intend to read.  This element could form the basis of your first meeting as our next book choice generally comes from this discussion.  The last part of our get together is a general chat about anything and the meeting tends to be about 2 hours.  We meet in each other others and provide wine but no food.

You do need forthright and opinionated people and I was amused to discover that new members are only invited to join if they display these characteristics.  At least I know what people think of me!! :)

I've read books I would not have otherwise considered but it's also OK if you haven't finished it, or even had a chance to read it yet - others will always fill in the gaps and a few missing opinions make no real difference to the session.  One of our members almost never reads the book choice and another tends to buy the audio version...  Good luck if you decide to go ahead, I really enjoy our meetings
