Can anyone tell me if the American Staffordshire Terrier is banned under the DDA in the UK. It is recognised as a seperate breed from the American Pit Bull Terrier in most other countries, but could be accused of being of 'pit bull type'. Also, does anyone know if there are any examples of the breed in this country.

It is a separate breed from the pit bull. However it is banned in the uk because they say it conforms to type. (pit bull type). This would mean its unlikely to find a specimen in the uk as they should have been dressed/nutered in 1991. If there was any left they would be 13+ and unable to breed anyway.(this doesnt mean there isnt any illegal ones just as there is still pit bulls available).
Its a shame as they are lovely dogs. The closest you will get to any of these dogs legaly in the uk is an ISBT, failing that a uk staff.

Hi doogdog
Its an Irish staffordshire bull terrier. Some times refered to as old type.
A lot of people say its a pit bull. It isnt. I have owned pit bulls and these dogs are nothing like them. However they are not really like our staffs either. there is a lot of debate about these dogs just now, and a lot of theorys as to what they are.
I beleive that the dogs are the same staffs as ours, only they have been bred in Eire for the last century for what some would call gameness, heat dissipation, and the ability to run longer distances without overheating. (more like a hound) Hence they are now taller and more slender, similar to a lurchers muscle tone. There are some dodgy people breeding these dogs and as usual getting them a bad name. Once again the breed suffers instead of the owners.
If I can explain anymore let me know.. All the best Mick
